Nigeria Set to Review Defence Policy

The Ministry of Defence will soon embark on a review of the nation’s National Defence Policy.
Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, made this known while delivering a paper at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru as part of activities to mark the 2012 annual Defence Week.

The planned review will commence with a defence workshop which will be convened to examine all the grey areas that should be modified to counter the current security challenges in the country, and come up with a common position to be presented to the appropriate council for review.

An assessment of Nigeria’s defence policy, towards sustainable development in Nigeria’, formed the thrust of the lecture delivered by Mrs Obada.

While she identified challenges in actualising the defence policy objectives to include weak and fragile economy, poor coordination of instruments of national power and inadequate resources, the Minister declared that “there is urgent need for a review.”

Issues highlighted in the lecture afforded participants of the senior executive course of the institute to raise questions about on current security challenges facing the nation.
