Man Commits Suicide Hours After Receipt of N200m Road Contract

A middle aged man identified as Tari, an Trofani in Sagbama local government area of Bayelsa State Saturday in Yenagoa reportedly took his own life.

A graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, the deceased it was learnt had just secured a government road contract worth N200m for the Igbedi- Amassoma  link road.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at the home of the deceased located within the Civil Servant Estate behind the office complex of the State Scholarship board.

The deceased who was found writhing in pains by close relatives in the early hours of Friday is believed to have drank a poisonous mixture.

A source told Greenwich news that the relatives and sympathizers, after discovering the deceased writhing in pain, rushed him to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) for treatment and reportedly took him to a Church after his condition deteriorated.

Though none could give reasons for the action of the decision of the deceased to end his life sources told Greenwich news that the mother of the deceased, who is identified as a retired civil servant and other family members were shocked over the incident.

While some close friends of the deceased blamed his tragic end to some mysterious powers, others claimed that he had, in the past few days, been receiving threat calls on his mobile phone.

They claimed the mysterious callers have been threatening to kill him over an undisclosed deal.

Contacted, the state police public relations officer, Fidelis Odunnwa (DSP) said though there has been no official report on the incident, the operatives of the command would be deployed to investigate the incident.

Probe Nnaji Now, Labour Insists

…Iserved my country well, Nnaji declares
Indications emerged at the weekend that more trouble may be in stock for Professor Barth Nnaji, the erstwhile Minister of Power, who left office in a dramatic way last Tuesday as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, is mounting intense pressure for a thorough investigation of his tenure as the Minister of Power.
This came as organized labour in the Power sector, said it was not surprised the way the former Minister left of office, saying it had been vindicated.
It will be recalled that the NLC had earlier said it was pleased with Tuesday’s resignation of Nnaji, alleging that he compromised the office of the Minister of Power with his personal business interests, and being a stumbling block to industrial peace and harmony in the power sector.
NLC, in a statement by its Acting General Secretary, Comrade Chris Uyot, declared that “We are pleased with the forced exit of Prof. Bart Nnaji who until last night was a major problem to renewed effort aimed at reactivating the power sector having compromised the Office of the Honourable Minister of Power with his personal business interests, and being oblivious and a stumbling block to industrial peace and harmony in the industry.
Reports are already in the public domain on Prof. Nnaji’s record of (alleged) financial recklessness, high handedness and (alleged) diversion of major businesses meant for PHCN to his private companies as well as companies he has vested interests.
“While we welcome his long awaited exit, we call on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately institute a thorough investigation into his tenure as minister in the Power Ministry. We also call on Mr. President to create an atmosphere of fairness and justice for speedy resolution of all outstanding labour matters in the process of disengaging some PHCN employees, which Prof. Nnaji stalled before his exit.
“The contentious issue of severance benefits is never an issue that cannot be resolved through dialogue, but Nnaji chose to heat up the system by blocking every avenue for dialogue and invited armed military personnel to intimidate workers under spurious pretenses.
“We believe the ongoing dialogue between labour and government will resolve these issues as quickly as possible if government is willing to accept meaningful dialogue in appreciation of the Condition of Service of the workers.”
Prof. Barth Nnaji
However, President of NLC, Comrade Abdulwahhed Omar, in Lagos, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting the long overdue “resignation” of Nnaji who, throughout his tenure as minister, overtly displayed his contempt for workers and did not also hide his personal interest in the industry.
Comrade Omar who was represented by Comrade Amina Danesi, an ex-officio of NLC, at 8th Biennial Delegates Conference of the Metal Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, MEPROSSAN, said “These clearly show he was never qualified to head that ministry in the first instance as his personal business interests in the sector definitely compromised his office.
“We urge Mr. President to immediately order an all encompassing investigation into Prof. Nnaji’s tenure in the ministry as well as speed up the resolution of all outstanding labour issues in the industry, including the withdrawal of armed soldiers that were invited by Prof. Nnaji to intimidate workers under false presumptions.”
Similarly, labour in the power sector, under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEAC, told Greenwich news that right from when Prof Nnaji was appointed Chairman of Presidential Task Force on Power, charged with developing and driving an action plan for the attainment of steady power supply in the country in July 2010, labour raised the issue of conflict of interest.
The unions argued that even when he was nominated for ministerial position, they strongly opposed his appointment as Minister especially for Power on the ground that he would not be an impartial minister because he is a player in the industry.
General Secretary of NUEE, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who said he did not want to talk about Prof Nnaji’s resignation for now, however, said we had warned the government against his appointment, but we were ignored. Today we are vindicated. We spoke of conflict of interest since 2010 and others, the government did not take us serious. But today, we are all living witnesses.”
It will be recalled that a day before the minister’s resignation, the union issued a statement  titled “Power Minister stinks “questioning his integrity and moral justification to remain as the Minister of Power.
Among other issues the union raised, it accused Nnaji of the appointment of “his kinsmen, classmates and others to key sensitive positions like Bulk Trader, Market Operator, CEOs and others.  To buttress our position, we challenge Nnaji to respond to the issues as here understated.
N280million collected from PHCN allegedly for Nigeria Army; N200million collected from PHCN allegedly for Unknown Projects in the Power Ministry;
N86m collected from PHCN allegedly for Bullet Proof Vehicle; N3million allegedly collected from PHCN and donated to Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) and employment of 20 people in Enugu Zone of PHCN who are his kith and kins as staff two years after the closing date of casual employment and close of PHCN biometrics exercise.  All these were allegations waiting to be dealt with or proved by the unions before the resignation of Nnaji.
It added that “Until these issues are addressed the Union will continue to press for accountability and probity. We insist that proper investigation must be conducted on PHCN before any form of privatization is carried out.”
The confrontation between Nnaji and organised labour in the nation’s electricity sector dates back to 2006 when the workers, under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, clashed with Professor Barth Nnarji over alleged unfair labour practices in Aba Power Ltd.
He was accused of using outlawed Bakassi boys to harass and intimidate union officers.
Speaking on NUEE confrontation with the former Minister, Comrade Ajaero, said  “As Adviser to the President on Power, he had irreconcilable differences with the workers and earned the unenviable mark of recording the highest number of industrial crisis in the Power Sector which was never the case before his appointment”.
Since the build up to the privatization of the PHCN, the unions and the government have not been able to settle the issue of Gratuity, Pension and the Superannuation fund.
Before his appointment, the unions had made it clear that But in a strongly worded statement on behalf of Professor Nnaji after the resignation, the former minister made it clear that he had put in his best in the service of his country, insisting that posterity would judge if indeed, he served well or did not.
In fact, Nnaji made bold to explain that his resignation was a sacrifice meant to protect President Jonathan from elements seeking ways to ambush his presidency.

Eaglets Dedicate 5-0 Rwanda Whitewash to Gov Imoke

Senator Liyel Imoke, the Executive Governor of Cross River State has been given the plaudits by the Golden Eaglets following their 5-0 defeat of Junior Wasps of Rwanda in an international friendly match played at the U.J Esuene Sports Stadium in Calabar.
The match was the Eaglets’ high profile match since they started camping in Calabar at the instance of Governor Imoke, who was ably represented Friday by Barrister Efiok Cohbam, the Deputy Governor as the special guest of honour.
“We are dedicating this victory to His Excellency, Governor Liyel Imoke because he’s our foremost supporter,” Head coach Manu Garba said after the game.
“The Governor as well as the people of Cross River State gave us the enabling environment for our camping and without adequate preparation; we would not be where we are today.
“Though he was unavoidably absent at the match against Rwanda today but he was represented by the Deputy Governor and we were left with no choice than to win this match.
“We want to use this opportunity to thank the Governor, the good people of Cross River State and the generality of Nigerians who have been supporting us with their prayers. We have not won anything yet rather we would strive to do our best to achieve our objectives on the long run,” Manu stated.
Clearly, the Golden Eaglets left nobody in doubt about their objectives in this international friendly against Rwanda with the manner they approached the game after they took the mandatory kick off.
The Golden Eaglets enjoyed greater possession of the ball in the early parts of the game but failed to convert some clear cut-out chances that came their way even as the Junior Wasps stood stoutly at the back.
But the spectators did not have to wait too long as the Golden Eaglets finally got the curtain raiser in the 18th minute  through Kelechi Iheanacho, the former Under-15 star who slotted the ball behind Kimenyi Yves in goal for Rwanda.
Star midfielder, Alhassan Ibrahim who was nicknamed ‘The New Kanu’ by the Honourable Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi during the screening of   players in March, scored a brace in the 35th and 46th minute of the match. The second goal, which came barely after the start of the second half, was a beauty in execution with as many as five players passing the ball for Ibrahim to finish off.
That goal killed off the spirit of the hitherto adventurous Rwandans as the Golden Eaglets piled up more pressures.
Two second half substitutes, Oluwaseun Jegede and Umar Ahmed added their names on the scorers’ sheet to the delight of the highly excited spectators.
Both coach Manu as well as his counterpart from Rwanda, coach Richard Tardy commended the efforts of both teams since it was the first time they are playing a match of such magnitude even as they promised to retool their teams for their second fixture slated for 11am on Sunday at the U. J Esuene Stadium.

Nollywood actor, Rich Oganiru Arrested For Allegedly Killing His Wife

rich-oganiru
Police authorities in Abuja Friday confirmed to Greenwich news that notable Nollywood actor, Mr. Rich Oganiru was arrested and is being investigated in connection with the alleged killing of his wife (names with-held).
According to the source, Oganiru was arrested following a petition by family and relations of the wife who claimed that she was poisoned by the actor who had allegedly perfected the act to do away with her in order to acquire her wealth said to be stupendous.
The wife was said to have been hospitalised for three months for an undisclosed ailment in an Abuja hospital with the Nollywood actor abandoning her  until the last day she was to be discharged, before Oganiru came to the hospital to take her home.
On getting home, she died that same day. Police sources however told Saturday Vanguard that though investigation into the death and alleged murder of the wife was still ongoing, Mr. Oganiru has been granted bail.
When Greenwich  news sought to know why the Police would grant a murder suspect bail, the source disclosed  that though there was evidence to show the actor did not treat his wife well regarding her well being, there was nothing to show the actor had a hand in her death.
The source pointed out that both forensic and medical examinations were performed on the corpse of the deceased and that the posthumous examination showed she did not die as a result of poison.
The allegation was that Rich Oganiru murdered his wife through poison. Though our investigation showed he did not treat her like a wife deserves to be treated, there was nothing to show that she died or was killed by poison.
Agency reports had indicated that Rich Oganiru who prides himself as one of the pioneering members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and has starred in over 300 movies is under detention for complicity leading to the death of a very rich Abuja based multimillionaire businesswoman believed to be his wife.
The report alleged that the woman was not his first wife, as the first wife also died years back and that Oganiru was in a very poor state of life before he met the Abuja based multi-millionaire who transformed his life in a matter of months.
Rich Oganiru, according to those who know him, continued the report, loves money and attention almost to a fault. Aside that, he also likes blowing his own trumpet as he always praises himself, “I have starred in over 300 movies, I am the Corporate Marketing Consultant to the Abuja Chapter of AGN, and a high flying Evangelist called to lead the skilled and unskilled gifted in art to realize their God’s given potentials in the Kingdom.
“I am the General Overseer of Davidical Order Ministry, we discover, develop, expose, empower and evangelize musicians, actors, and artistes to be relevant in their different churches- a non denominational outreach for the entertainment industry”, according to his self- appraised on face book.
Tracing the genesis of their liaison, the report alleged the late wife met the Owerri born actor who earlier lost his wife and mother of his two boys at a time he was facing financially challenges and could hardly afford daily meal.

Appeal Court Asked To Nullify Proceedings In $15m Ibori Bribe Money

former Delta State Governor,
Chief James Ibori
The battle over the $15m cash allegedly received by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as bribe money from the convicted former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, assumed another dimension on Friday, following a request to the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, to nullify the proceedings of the Abuja Federal High Court in the matter.
A lawyer, Mr. Timipa Okponipere, who claimed to be suing for and on behalf of the government and people of Delta State, filed the fresh application at the appellate court.
Interestingly, the Abuja FHC, presided by Justice Gladys Olotu, had on Aug. 29, 2012, struck out a suit in which Okponipere requested the refund of the money to Delta State.
Okponipere had claimed that he filed the application at the FHC “for and on behalf of the Government and people of Delta State.” But the court dismissed the suit after the Attorney General of Delta State, Chief Charles Ajuyah, SAN, who also filed a motion claiming the money for the state, denied authorising it.
Ajuyah had told the court that, as the chief law officer of Delta State, he ought to have authorised Okponipere’s suit.
However, Okponipere claimed in an affidavit tendered in support of his motion that he had earlier filed a suit claiming the money for Delta on July 27, 2012, before the Abuja FHC, pursuant to the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules 2009.
In a related development, the Congress for Progressive Change said the twist in the bribery scandal had further exposed the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
Meanwhile, Senator Andy Uba, who is currently representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate, has denied any involvement in the bribe saga.

Business Expansion Strategies For SMEs

My desire is that the SME Toolkit will help MSMEs to expand their offerings and business operations while making profits for the owners and continually meeting the needs of their markets. However, one challenge SMEs have is how to expand their business operations, moving their business from a one-man, few-people, mom-and-pop business to a large, national and even global enterprise. While I know that this boils down to the vision of the owner(s), I also know that for this to happen, an SME owner/manager needs to develop a strategic framework to support whatever laudable or ambitious vision they have for their businesses.
1. The need for vision for SME expansion
It is no more news that some of the world’s leading businesses today, especially those in the dot.com sector, started with offices in garages (Microsoft), college dormitories (Dell Computers) and as experimental projects (Yahoo!, Google, Youtube, etc). Nevertheless, these entrepreneurs had a bigger vision on their inside. They dreamt one day to take over the business landscape with their unique product and service offerings. Today, our lives, social, business and professional interactions, are largely dependent on the products of these erstwhile “midget” firms. For instance, what can you do today with regard to spread sheet and word processing applications, without using Microsoft application software packages? How can you stay in touch with friends, customers and business partners today without using online mailing services like Yahoo!, Google and the rest? The point I am trying to make is this: because your business started in a garage, a small shop, your balcony, your boys’ quarters, your kitchen, etc, does not mean it cannot become a local, national and global champion. It only depends on your vision. Your capacity to envision the future and define the role you want to play in it is the starting point in business expansion and personal success.
2. The need for a business plan
To become a business success, MSMEs must embrace the corporate culture, attitude, behaviour and practices of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) or large corporations. One of the corporate practices of large corporations is thinking on paper or electronic notepad. They don’t just plan to execute a strategy, business tactic or vision by just mouthing it or saying it is stored in their head, they write down the business plan for their corporate vision. A business plan is a beam of light that guides the business owner/manager in the tortuous highway of business. It is also a compass, a rudder, a beacon, a touchstone, a barometer, a lodestar, a personal assessment plan, a marketing tool, a finance document, an HR guide, a piece of investment outlay and a strategy document for a business. So, having a business plan is not just an ordinary expense that is to be done when your business has grown, wise business owners go through some form of business planning processes even while their business is in the garage. Business plan strengthens corporate vision and facilitates its realisation.
3. Organic Development as a Business Expansion Strategy
By organic or internal development, this is when an organisation achieves competitive edge and growth by utilising and matching its competencies and skill-sets with the opportunities/needs in the business environment. It is an inside-out kind of development, resulting from the efforts of the business owners/managers to build their businesses by using their strengths (skills, products, services, proprietary rights, etc) to match the needs and opportunities in the business ecology. This can be done through the following:
• Skill Audit. This is important. An organisation can achieve strategic fit and stretch by auditing its various competencies, skill-sets, product or service knowledge, business acumen, etc, and maximally putting them to use to achieve greater competitive advantage and profitability for the business. Let’s take for instance, if your organisation makes soap very well and you have some unique formula that is not available on the market and some technology that helps you in cutting your soaps into some exciting shapes and so on, you can use that strength to achieve competitive advantage in the marketplace, other things being equal.
• Identification of backend opportunities. Your organisation must constantly strive to identify lateral business opportunities that can fetch some revenue for your business. For instance, a school owner can go into publishing of note and/or text books. She can hire out her school space on weekends for corporate or social events. She can get some professional institutes, tertiary and technical institutions to use her facilities in the evenings or weekends for training their students on their distance-learning programmes.
• Strategic stretch in leveraging present competencies to take advantage of new market opportunities. Similar to the above but a little different, by strategic stretch, you are creating new markets by deploying your existing competencies to take advantage of new market opportunities. As a school owner again, having discovered that your neighbourhood has many adults without formal education, you can tap into that opportunity and use your teaching skills and facilities to start an adult education centre. All these activities, no doubt, are not going to affect your main nursery, primary and/or secondary school operations.
• Aggressive marketing and positioning. This is one area most SMEs would prefer someone should do this activity for them. However, it is not bad to have a marketing unit in your firm as an SME. That, in fact, is a step in the right direction. However, what I am advocating here is the need to make marketing an organisational activity and culture that cuts across from senior staff to junior workers. You should be an advocate of marketing as an activity that everyone on your payroll should be involved in because of the dire consequences the business can be subjected to when sales are low.

I Would Not Have Liked Any Other Job But Acting - Olu Jacobs

s
Olu Jacobs

Foremost actor, Olu Jacobs, shares his experiences.
At 70, you are still strong and agile. What is the secret?
I suppose it is because I live each day at a time and I don’t worry about what happens in future because tomorrow will sort out itself. It took me a while to learn to do that. The moment you understand this, you can do nothing but prepare for the future. That is all I have been doing.
Does it mean that you don’t let anything bother you?
I try not to let anything bother me. I try to control the things that are within my power. But I try to make sure that the things that are beyond my control are as painless as possible. At the same time, I always try to find plausible ways to handle them.
Do you sometimes feel that you could have chosen another career other than acting?
I don’t think there is any other job that I would have liked to do. I don’t think I would have liked any job that would take me away from the public. I enjoy making people happy. Their laughter disarms me. I really enjoy seeing people happy. With this job, I am able to make them laugh as often as possible. I don’t know any other job that would have given me this opportunity.
Aren’t you worried that you can’t walk freely on the street without being stopped by your fans?
They didn’t ask me to invade their lives. I enter their homes and they like the way I do it. How can I say I am tired? I cannot be tired. I would rather be surrounded by fans and be greeted every second. It excites me. Do you know what it means for somebody to feel so strongly about you and even come to hold your hand? I was in London recently and it was worse. Some fans saw me and screamed. They held my hands and prayed for me. It was wonderful. How can I deny somebody attention when it affects his or her life? I can never be tired.
Are you thinking of retiring soon?
There is always a role for everybody from the cradle till they get old. So, where am I retiring to? As long as I am fit and able, I will continue. I will slow down a bit, no doubt, but I can’t retire.
What motivated you to become an actor?
In my secondary school days, our principal used to say, ‘Seize the opportunity.’ There is nothing difficult that cannot be made easy if you are interested. I was brought up in the Anglican Church and I had relations who were members of Cherubim and Seraphim. When they held their harvest thanksgiving service, we would attend. They were doing more music than we were. It was fun and I always looked forward to it. I always wanted to participate in their activities. I was born in Kano. When I was seven, I was sent on an errand and I saw this big lorry with music blasting from it. The passengers were sharing fliers. They threw one at me. When the road cleared, I picked it up and put it in my pocket. I gave it to my mother and I told her that it would be nice to attend the event written on it. She said it was alright as long as I finished doing my chores. She listed a few things for me to do. In no time, I finished my tasks. When she inspected them, she was shocked. I reminded her about the flier. She ignored me. But behind me, she went to my father and told him about it. She told my father that I had done everything I was supposed to do in the house. Then he asked her to tell all of us to get ready for the event. The event was Ogunde Dance. The flier indicated the venue where the group would be performing. They played in Colonial Hotel, which was situated in the Sabon-Gari area. The same hotel has been renamed Paradise Hotel. In those days, there were no theatres. But the hall where the event took place was very big and beautiful. The place was crowded. Our seats were not too far from the stage. I was looking at everybody. The lights went off and the spotlight came on. They started the opening glee with a dance. The dance was beautiful. I was very excited. Then, the play started. It was wonderful. You cannot explain it. It was incredible what people were feeling. I just said to myself, ‘This is what I would like to do.’ I couldn’t sleep for days. I kept replaying everything in my mind. I was still in school then. I was a Boy Scout, an altar boy, and a member of the choir. I told my father that I was going to act. He waved me aside, wondering aloud how a mere hobby could become a full-time job. He told me not to worry, that I would outgrow it.
Tell us about life in primary and secondary school.
It was fun. I had a teacher. She was very beautiful. I had a crush on her. One day, she came to our house in company with a young man. She introduced him to my parents as her fiancé. I was angry. I was in her class. I vowed never to have anything to do with her. I stopped attending her classes. If I was in the class when she came in, I would leave the class. She had to come and report this to my parents. They called me and I said there was no problem between us. My younger sister now opened the lid. She said it was because of my teacher’s boyfriend. They couldn’t do anything about it and I was very angry. They eventually got married and we all became friends.
How did your father react to your decision to study drama at the Royal Academy in London?
It wasn’t easy. I was about 22 years then. I took a guarantor’s form to my father and he tore it up. He told me that I wasn’t going abroad since my brothers were already there. I was shocked. I went to meet his brother (my uncle) and connived with him. I collected another form and took it to my uncle who signed it. I applied for passport and visa and I got them. I told my mother. She asked me if this was what I really wanted. I said yes. She prayed for me and gave me her blessings. The following morning, I saw my father and greeted him. Everything was normal. I did my normal chores. Later, I sneaked to the train station. I took a train from Kano to Lagos. That same night as I got to Lagos, I went to the airport and left the shores of Nigeria for England. Everything had already been planned. My brothers were expecting me.
Did your father forgive you for disobeying him?
Yes, he did. A friend of ours was returning to Nigeria. I bought pipes and the best tobacco for him. My brothers tried to discourage me because they felt my father wouldn’t listen to me. I told them not to worry, that I knew my father was a smoker and he would love the gifts. I sent a letter with the gifts. Eventually, my friend went home and delivered the message. I asked him how my father received the message and gifts. He said that my dad was initially upset. But 10 minutes after opening the parcel, he saw the pipes and tobacco and was excited. My friend said Dad just filled the pipes with the tobacco and started smoking it. That was when he finally asked my friend how I was faring. I wrote to him again and he replied. He didn’t say anything other than that he wanted to know if I was okay. He didn’t come out straight to say he had forgiven me, but I knew he had done so. We never talked about it again.
How did you cope with the pressure of training as an actor in England?
My brothers could not be of help to me because they didn’t belong to the profession. I was left to find my way. A vendor told me about an entertainment magazine when I was trying to get a job. I thought that I had found the solution to my problems; I didn’t know it was just the beginning. I found out that to become an actor in the UK, you had to join the Equity. But you could not become a member if you didn’t have a job. You could not get a job if you had no agent. And no agent would accept you because his books were already filled. I had nowhere to go. I tried my best. A black actor, who was a friend of mine, had already become a member of the Equity. He was going to attend an audition the next day. He told me about it and I was very happy for him. Wondering when I would ever get such an opportunity, I begged him if I could accompany him to the auditioning. He said I should come. He gave me the address and the time for the auditioning. I was the first person to arrive at the venue of the event. Eventually, a white man came. He brought a piece of paper and said I should write my name and my telephone number. Aware that I was the first person on the list to be auditioned, I was very nervous. I almost couldn’t write my name. Finally, the director arrived and I was called. I guess I did well. The director said I should give them my agent’s name and address so that they would contact the person. I saw my friend when I was through. He had yet to be auditioned. I told him I had got the job. I begged him to give me his agent’s number since I didn’t have one. He gave it to me. I went to the nearest telephone booth and I phoned the agent. A lady answered the phone and I introduced myself. I told her I just had an audition with the BBC and I gave her name as my agent. I asked her to give me her office address so I could come and give her all my details. She did. When I got there, she was already outside. She was curious. She said she wanted to meet me. That was the beginning of my journey as a professional.
Was the journey easy?
There were so many people chasing the same thing. I asked myself why I had to sit in London when there were other jobs outside London. Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, and other cities had theatres. So, why should I kill myself in London? Come to think of it, how many of those theatres were built for blacks? I told my agent that I would like to go away from London. He was so happy. I was the first actor that ever told him he wanted to leave London. He supported me. He used to come everywhere to watch my plays. My leaving London paid off very handsomely. I eventually came back to London. I no longer attended auditions, but interviews. People were now the ones calling me. My ability was no longer in doubt and I also had the right attitude. Even when I was acting, I was getting busy with TV and radio.
Why did you return to Nigeria?
I sat back and watched. Then I saw that there wasn’t much hope for a black actor in England; not at that time, at least.
Even after you had appeared in movies like
Dogs of War and Ashanti?
How many times would I get the opportunity to appear in such movies? I didn’t want to be carried away by the euphoria. I decided to come back home. Some people came from the USA to meet me. They wanted me to come and perform on the stage over there. But they didn’t offer me any definite thing. The only thing definite was teaching the master’s degree class in acting and voice. I couldn’t take it. I had to go home. At least I understood the language. There is nothing they have overseas that we don’t have. We only need to develop what belongs to us.
Your first production was
Third Eye. Were you involved in another thing before the series?
The first major production was Third Eye. I believe in law and order. Any country that wishes to succeed must have law and order. We need to show how police can be your friend. You tell their story through television. Every country has such law and order series. We had to tell our stories. We succeeded at a point, with the PHCN permitting us.
Also, you became a part of Nollywood,
I didn’t need to become a part of Nollywood. We are Nollywood. What we were doing suddenly got a name. People can call it any name. But really, what Nollywood means is actually ‘Not Hollywood.’ The New York Times sent a reporter to Nigeria to find out about this phenomenon. He interviewed me and we discussed at length. But it doesn’t matter what anybody calls it. The demand for movies was there. Our people abroad were missing home. Whenever you travel overseas, the first question that they ask you is if you have brought some movies from Nigeria. It didn’t come as a surprise that the industry became successful. Other blacks started doing what we are doing. We started telling our stories ourselves. It is having a positive effect on the young ones and it is giving the older ones the assurance that all hope is not lost.
Was that why you established the Olufodo Academy?
It is like demand and supply. When demand for artistes is very high and you want this industry to survive, then people must be prepared in such a way that the quality can be maintained and improved upon. We must continue to think of how the next generation of actors will emerge and how to maintain them.
After training at the Royal Academy, did you think of getting more education?
No. I attended more workshops. I had a regular voice teacher and acting teacher during the period I stayed in London. Before any job, my teacher and I would look at it and go through it before proceeding on the production. That you are a professional doesn’t mean you shouldn’t train again. You have to train every time.
Since you spent such a long time in England, why didn’t you marry a white woman?
I couldn’t. I am too sensitive. How would I have coped? So, after talking to my relatives and brothers, I would turn to my wife and interpret what we said? No. I didn’t want that.
So you deliberately married an actress?
Yes. It was by choice. When I was much younger, I had thought that getting married to somebody in the same profession would not be possible. I didn’t want it because the woman would be travelling all the time. But when it happened, it happened. We don’t usually look inwards.
Did you meet her on the job?
Yes. I was invited to come and produce and direct a play at the National Theatre. We were having a production meeting. The production was to celebrate Nigeria’s 21st independence anniversary. During the meeting, somebody opened the door and I looked and I saw her. I told the people I was meeting with that I had found the woman I was going to marry. She looked at me from head to toe. But, in less than five years, we got married.
You didn’t marry early.
No. I was married to my job. It was a decision I had to take. I couldn’t marry two wives. I had to choose one. I had to choose my job in order to secure it first so that it would benefit me and my wife. I don’t think I have any regret marrying late. I had a wonderful time.
Sometime ago, it was rumoured that you were dead and that you were separated from your wife. How did you feel when you heard the rumours or read about them?
Sometimes it is misunderstood and misinterpreted. Sometimes, it is deliberate sensationalism. Somebody who never phoned me before called to ask if I was alright. She asked if everything was okay. The next person called to tell me about somebody dying. That is just it.
How did you feel when the Federal Government gave you a national award?
I felt humbled. I didn’t work for any reward. I just wanted to be able to feed my family. I just feel humbled by it.
What more do you hope to achieve?
My blood is as hot as it was when I was young. I am still going to keep on acting. I am talking to producers now. I haven’t done anything in a while. I have been busy since the beginning of the year. Since then, they have been calling. Soon, I shall start work.

UEFA SUPER CUP: Atletico Madrid embarrass Chelsea

Atletico Madrid have secured their second UEFA Super Cup in three years courtesy of a 4-1 win over Chelsea in Monaco.
Radamel Falcao became the first player to score a hat-trick in the Super Cup since Terry McDermott of Liverpool back in 1977 in the 6-0 (7-1 aggregate) win over Hamburg.
It was the Colombian ace’s second hat-trick in five days, following his treble in the league win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday, allowing the Europa League champs to back-up their Super Cup triumph over Inter Milan in 2010.
Falcao opened the scoring inside six minutes against the Champions League winners with a deft finish from the left side of the area on an angle which popped in off the far upright despite the defensive efforts of David Luiz.
The 26-year old striker then doubled the lead with a sublime finish in the 19th minute, curling a left-footer from just inside the box over a scrambling Petr Cech.
Falcao then made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time when Arda Turan set him up for a close range through the legs of Cech to make it a second hat-trick for the week.
It only got worse for Chelsea when a free-kick was whipped into the area with the ball falling for Miranda who slotted past Cech to see the ball deflect off Gary Cahill and into the back of the net.
Chelsea managed to grab a consolation goal with around 15 minutes remaining when Gary Cahill received a kind bounce at the head of a dearth players in the box to rifle home from close range, giving Thibaut Courtois no chance.
It could have been far worse for Roberto Di Matteo’s Blues with Falcao hitingt the crossbar early, and then the upright from close range later whilst Cech made a number of vital saves, most notably the late reaction block when Koke curled a goalward free-kick from the left flank which evaded all in the box bar the Czech gloveman.
Diego Simeone’s Atletico managed to keep the trophy in Spain after their win in 2010 and Barcelona’s victories over Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Porto in 2009 and 2011.
2012 UEFA Super Cup
Chelsea: 1 (Gary Cahill 75’)
Atletico Madrid: 4 (Radamel Falcao 6’/19’/45’, Miranda 60’)

29 Killed and 16 injured as Two Buses Collide, burst Into Flames

Two buses collided head-on and burst into flames in northern Nigeria’s Yobe state on Friday, killing at least 29 people, police said.

“Two Toyota Hiace Buses… travelling in opposite directions on the Potiskum-Kano Road had a head-on collision and thereafter went off in flames.

Twenty nine persons — eleven of them burnt beyond recognition — have so far been confirmed dead,” national police spokesman Frank Mba said in a statement, adding that 16 people were also injured.

Police said the accident happened at 1:00 pm (1200 GMT) in the state’s Nengere area and the injured were taken to a hospital in the neaby city of Potiskum.

The statement lamented the “incessant cases of accidents” on Nigeria’s highways, considered some of the most dangerous in the world.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Sector Commander, Malam Shehu Umar,  confirmed that the two buses travelling on the opposite direction had a head on collusion about 10 km from Potiskum and killed the passengers on board.

“The buses went up in fire as they collided, killing the 29 victims with nine burnt beyond recognition,’’ he said.

Umar attributed the accident to reckless driving and over-speeding, adding: “accidents on this road are mostly associated with reckless driving and over-speeding.’’

More than 17,000 people died in about 31,000 road accidents across the country, between 2007 and 2009, according to the federal road safety agency’s 2010 report, the most recent published.

Robbers Kill 13 policemen in Rivers –CP

Police commissioner gives data on police activity in the state.
The Rivers Police Command says 13 of its police officers were killed by armed robbers between April and August.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, made this known at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Mr. Indabawa said the command killed 36 armed robbery and kidnap suspects in shoot outs, and arrested 365 others during the period under review. He said that the police rescued 17 kidnapped victims during the raids on criminal hideouts.
A breakdown of those arrested showed that 199 were armed robbery suspects, 82 kidnap suspects, 78 suspected cultists and 6 vandals. 52 assorted firearms and 600 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
Mr. Indabawa added that 42 stolen vehicles and motorbikes were recovered during the period following raids of 22 criminal hideouts.
He said the achievement came because of the cooperation of the police, the State Government, the mobile telephone service providers, and members of the public.
The commissioner called for the production of the national identification card for the citizens, saying the residential addresses given by arrested suspects had turned out to be false.
He said the command is committed to the protection of lives and property of the people.

Fulham signs Manchester United Striker, Dimitar Berbatov At £5m

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has signed for Fulham, agreeing a two-year deal.
The Bulgarian, 31, was wanted by several clubs, including Italian sides Fiorentina and Juventus, but opted to remain in the Premier League.
Fulham have refused to disclose how much they paid for the striker.
''As soon as I was aware of Fulham's interest, my decision to join was an easy one," said Berbatov, who played under Fulham boss Martin Jol at Spurs.
"I'm impressed with the set-up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can't wait to get started."
Jol added: "Dimitar is a player I've always admired. He's a player of great quality and technical ability who will give me the attacking option I've been looking for. When he's not scoring goals, his ingenuity often leads chances being created for his team-mates."
Fiorentina thought they had tied up a deal for Berbatov. They claimed they had been given permission by United to speak to the player but that he failed to turn up in Florence for talks after they had paid for his flight.
"We are happy he did not come to Fiorentina," read a club statement. "He did not deserve our city and our shirt and the values it represents."

FG Approves N1.8bn For Condoms And Family Planning Commodities

Government has approved the sum of N1.8 billion ($11.3 million) for the procurement of condoms and family planning commodities, as part of its efforts at reducing maternal mortality and promoting planned parenthood.
The Director of Family Health in the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Bridget Okoeguale, disclosed this in Abuja during the 47th National Council Meeting of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria.
According to her, the amount is for the purchase of condoms, implants and other necessities.
She said that some states do not have a budget line for family planning, despite the global campaign.
“Last year, in order to reduce the maternal mortality rate, the Federal Government proclaimed that reproductive health commodities and family planning commodities like condom and implants would be free. Now that it is free, people will have to be rushing it,” she said.
“So, the government, along with the partners, made a forecast as to what we need in the country, and contributed $3m in 2011 through a Memorandum of Understanding which we implemented. But this year, globally, on July 11 to be precise, in London, there was a family planning summit organised by DFID and other partners to increase the commitment of governments all over the world to family planning.
“Nigeria came in a big way, and Mr. President, through the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced the Federal Government’s commitment to the world with an additional $8.3m reproductive health commodities.”
Okoeguale said that FG was appealing to states to key in, because health is on the concurrent list.
“The Federal Government has a plan and policy but we cannot force states to key in. We can only advocate for them; they make requests to us as regards what they need but it is for them to ensure that these commodities reach the grassroots,” she said.

Girl 15, Commits Suicide After Squabble With Father

Residents of Kwanan Bola Street in Badarawa a suburb of Kaduna metropolis were yesterday thrown into confusion when a 15-year-old girl committed suicide allegedly because her father scolded her. It was gathered that the deceased drank a poisonous substance. A source told Greenwich news that the girl after taking the substance became unconscious. It was further gathered that when she was discovered, she was given liquid milk and palm oil to “slow down the effect of the poison in her body” before she was rushed to the hospital in the area where she was pronounced dead.
Our correspondent who visited the deceased’s home, reports that sympathizers were seen trooping to the house to console her parents.
A source said trouble started when the father of the deceased, who is a police officer, had an argument with the deceased over an issue.
“I only talked to her about an issue which I do not like. I told her that I was not happy with her behaviour. I said I do not like seeing boys around her, that is all we talked about. I never raised my hand to beat her. I liked her because she was a good girl. But look at what she did to herself. When I was leaving the house this morning, she was lying down in the sitting room, and she apologized for offending me. I told her I was not happy with her recent behaviour, and she told me to forgive her. I was at the office when I received a phone call that I should come home immediately that my daughter has been rushed  to Garkuwa hospital. Before I got there, I received another call that I should come straight home, where I met her lifeless body,” he said.
He said initially, the deceased was not living with him, but that she visited him a few years back and she asked him to secure admission for her in a secondary school in the area.
“It was when she visited us that she told me to get her admission to proceed with her studies here in Badarawa. She had just completed her junior secondary school then. I just don’t know why she did what she did,” he said.
The mother of the deceased refused to speak to the press, saying they have left everything to God.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Aminu Lawan, confirmed the incident, saying the father of the girl had been invited for questioning.
“We have invited the father for questioning because it seems there was a problem between him and his daughter before she died”, he said.

400 Nigerian Students In UK face Deportation

Over 400 Nigerians studying at the London Metropolitan University face deportation due to the institution’s administrative challenges.
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) announced on Wednesday that the University lost its Highly Trusted Status for sponsoring international students.
More than a quarter of the University’s foreign students did not have permission to be in the UK, the Immigration Minister, Damian Green told the AP.
Foreign students sponsored by the school to the UK now face eviction if they fail to secure an alternative sponsor within two months, starting from Thursday.

The University however says it is working to secure alternative admission for the Students within the UK.
“The implications of the revocation are hugely significant and far-reaching, and the University has already started to deal with these,” Malcolm Gillies, Vice-Chancellor of the University said on Thursday.
Mr. Gillies said the university “will be working very closely with the UKBA, HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England), the National Union of Students and its own Students’ Union,” to meet its obligations to the affected students.
London Met Uni. and Nigeria
With over 400 students from Nigeria, the London Metropolitan University is one of the most popular universities in the UK for Nigerian students.

It  also claims to be the first UK University to open an office in Nigeria. However, up till late afternoon on Thursday, the Nigerian office of the university told parents and guardians they are yet to determine the fate of Nigerian students currently running programs at the university.
The University’s contact in Lagos - who wished to be called Imabong – said they are yet to obtain  the next steps from the school in London.
“We don’t have any information about the fate of students in London,” she said.
More Nigerian admissions

Ms. Imabong added that even though they are worried, like most parents, the school is focused on meeting its obligations to prospective students who are still in Nigeria.
The Lagos office has sent out text messages to prospective students offering to help with links to alternative institutions or refund their refundable fees.

Nigerian Wins Gold at the London Paralympics

Yakub-Adesokan

Yakubu Adesokan, Thursday, won the first gold medal for Nigeria in the on-going Paralympic Games in London.
Adesokan also broke the world record in his event for the gold.
While the country endured two weeks of endless wait for medals at the Olympics proper,  the Special

Athletes literally hit the ground running in the first day of action in London
Adesokan, 33, did it in style, on Day 1 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at ExCel, when he broke the world record in the men’s 48 category by lifting 178 kg, which is over three times his body weight.
For many, that could pass for the beginning of a medal rush for Nigeria at the Games.
The country’s 29- man team to London will be partaking in four events which are power-lifting (16 athletes), athletics (nine), table tennis (two) and wheelchair tennis (two).

Sadly, unlike the pump and pageantry that greeted the departure of the able bodied athlete that went on to fumble in London, same cannot be said of the physically challenged athletes who failed to get any attention from the media,  corporate world and even next to nothing from the constituted authorities.
Nigeria, it will be recalled, made her Paralympic Games debut at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona where only six male athletes represented the country and came back with three gold medals
Nigeria has participated in every subsequent edition of the Summer Paralympics, winning a total of 22 gold medals, 11 silver, and 12 bronze.

The Sydney 2000 Games remain the best outing for Nigeria where the athletes came back with seven gold medals; a feat many see possible again in London.
Sports Minister and Chairman of National Sports Commission, Bolaji Abdullahi reportedly heaved a sigh of relief when the cheery news came, and urged the Nigerian heroes and heroines not to relent in their efforts to win more medals.

“The Minister is happy with the feat of Yakubu Adesokan in winning the first gold for Nigeria at the Paralympics and also over-joyed at his feat of breaking the World record,” the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Julius Ogunro said “It is one thing to win gold and another super feat to break the World record.”
Action will continue Friday across the other sports

Harvard University Charges 125 Students With Examination Malpractice

In what is being called the largest Ivy League cheating scandal in living memory, some 125 Harvard University undergraduates have been accused of colluding on a final exam and are being investigated by the university.

University officials have said the students may have violated a no-collaboration policy printed on the take-home test by working together to come up with answers or by copying answers from their classmates. Jay Harris, Harvard’s dean of undergraduate education, told the Boston Globe that the students’ answers were either identical or “too close for comfort.”

The potentially plagiarized answers were discovered in May by a teaching fellowwho was grading the tests. Members of the school’s administrative board have spent the months since interviewing students and reviewing the exams.

In a statement, Harvard president Drew Faust said:

"These allegations, if proven, represent totally unacceptable behavior that betrays the trust upon which intellectual inquiry at Harvard depends. We must deal with this fairly and through a deliberative process. At the same time, the scope of the allegations suggests that there is work to be done to ensure that every student at Harvard understands and embraces the values that are fundamental to its community of scholars."

According to Bloomberg News, the 125 students—out of 250 enrolled in the course—will face hearings before the board. Those found guilty could face up to a year-long suspension. The university is not releasing the names of the students in question and have declined to identify which course they were taking.

Lawyer for pope's butler quits over strategy

A lawyer for the pope's ex-butler, who is facing trial for his role in the Vatican leaks scandal, has resigned.
Attorney Carlo Fusco said Thursday he had quit as Paolo Gabriele's attorney over differences in defense strategy. It wasn't immediately clear if Gabriele's other lawyer, Cristiana Arru, was remaining on as counsel.
A Vatican judge earlier this month ordered Gabriele to stand trial for allegedly stealing documents from Pope Benedict XVI's private apartment. The documents formed the basis of news articles and a book exposing power struggles and purported corruption at the highest levels of the Catholic Church's governance.
Fusco has essentially acknowledged Gabriele's guilt after Vatican police found papal documents in Gabriele's Vatican City apartment.
The trial is expected to begin in late September or October.

Keshi Names Eagles’ Squad Saturday

Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi has disclosed that he would on Saturday release the list of home-based players that would be part of the 8 September South Africa 2013 Nations Cup qualifier against the Lone Star of Liberia in Monrovia.
The former Hawks of Togo coach said he would prune the number of home-based players in the team to complement the 11 foreign-based players earlier invited for the crucial encounter. stating that he would only pick the best.
According to him “I would release the final list of players that would be part of my plans for the Liberia clash on Saturday because I want a very formidable team”.
Meanwhile, he said the exclusion of Chelsea midfielder,  Mikel Obi from his list of foreign-based players for the clash was not based on sentiment.
Keshi noted that he and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF have no problem as reported by the media.
The coach said that he and Mikel had an understanding, adding that the Chelsea of England player called him all the time.
“I told him, if you come you must give me 100 per cent but we might be playing on the artificial turf, and he said the turf idea was not so good but that I should let him talk to his doctor.
“He  called me back four days later and said, ‘Coach, I don’t think I can play because of the turf, please if there is any other game, I will like to come’.
“I said okay, since we have another match in October, we can bring him in but that is not a guarantee,” Keshi said.
The Super Eagles handler explained that Osaze’s case was entirely different from Mikel’s, claiming that Osaze never responded to his calls.

Nigeria Beats Mexico to Qualify for Semi-finals

Nigeria have won their way into their second successive FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup semi-final with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over a resilient Mexico in Tokyo.
Nigeria, beaten finalists in Germany two years ago, were dominant throughout the first hour, but were unable to make the breakthrough on the scoreboard until Desire Oparanozie’s decisive goal on 109 minutes.

The Africans made much of the early running and appeared to have a crucial early goal as Francisca Ordega’s shot deflected past goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago on the quarter-hour, only for the offside flag to be raised for an earlier infringement.
Almost immediately Oparanozie forced Santiago into a sprawling save as Nigeria looked to turn the screws in the late afternoon heat.
With far more possession in midfield Nigeria were inching their way closer to breaking the deadlock and Oparanozie rattled the crossbar with her shot eight minutes before the interval.
The always dangerous Sofia Huerta, scorer of three goals in the tournament, made a rare incursion into the Africans’ penalty area just before the break, to provide some impetus for the Mexicans.
However, the one-way traffic continued immediately upon the resumption, much to the delight of a large and buoyant group of Nigeria supporters, whose tunes and singing resonated around the National Stadium throughout the match.
Approaching the hour mark Santiago again thwarted the Africans with an important block from Gloria Ofoegbu’s effort, and then again a few minutes later from Oparanozie.
Mexico slowly started to make an impression and enjoyed a rare sight of goal midway through the second half, only for inspirational skipper Nayeli Rangel to push her back-post header narrowly over.
Nigeria’s midfield play became less cohesive and Mexico could have won it in injury time as a corner looped onto the crossbar.
A fairly disjointed period of extra time was enlivened only on a few occasions, notably by Mexico’s Yamile Franco hitting the bar with an angled free-kick.
With the match starting to swing back Mexico’s way, it was Nigeria who conjured a winner, with Oparanozie looping a perfectly executed header from Ugo Njoku’s cross over a stranded Santiago.

Workers jubilate over Nnaji’s resignation

It was a thanksgiving session at the premises of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) office, Alausa yesterday as workers turned out in their numbers to rejoice over the resignation of Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji.

As early as 8am, some workers of the company had assembled in front of the office singing Christian praise songs as they were later joined by others.
By 9.30 am the car park lounge of the company was full, with Comrade Mbang Ntukubes, Vice President, NUEE, Lagos and Ogun Zone, Comrade Chris Onomeh, National Auditor NUEE and Comrade Christopher Oluwaranti Abodunde, State Financial Secretary, Lagos State NUEE, the workers were seen offering thanksgiving and prayers.
The exercise was said to have followed a directive issued by the umbrella union of the PHCN staff, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), that all staff of PHCN nationwide should observe a 30-minute thanksgiving before the commencement of work yesterday as a sign of victory.
During the prayer session, the staffers carried a mock coffin and photograph of Nnaji which they later destroyed after the 30 minutes session.
Comrade Ntukubes said that Nnaji’s resignation is a celebration of truth over falsehood and that “the resignation is not the end to our agitation. Nnaji should also be prosecuted for all the funds he has allegedly stolen from PHCN.”

Tottenham to sell Van der Vaart, Lennon

Van der  Vaart
Aaron Lennon, Scott Parker and Rafael van der Vaart have reportedly been put up for sale by Tottenham.
The senior trio, who were all key figures in the Spurs team that finished fourth in the Premier League last season under Harry Redknapp, are set to be the latest casualties of the Andre Villas-Boas revolution, according to football website Goal.com.
The Portuguese has decided to completely refurbish the team that Redknapp built as he seeks to lower the average age of the squad and introduce greater dynamism in the spine of the team.
Sources have told the website that Van der Vaart, 29, Lennon, 25, and Parker, who turns 32 in October, have all been made aware they will be sold for the right price.
Lennon
Van der Vaart will be allowed to leave this week if cash-strapped Hamburg, the Dutchman’s former club, can meet Spurs’ nine-million-pound valuation before Friday’s deadline.
Spurs will also, more surprisingly, listen to offers for Lennon and Parker. It is understood that Villas-Boas shares Redknapp’s doubts about Lennon’s ability to consistently deliver the goods and does not see a long-term role for Parker in central midfield.
The 5.5-million-pound 2011 deadline-day buy from West Ham started all four of England’s matches at Euro 2012 but is likely to have slipped down the pecking order when he returns in October after undergoing surgery on his right Achilles.
It is unlikely Lennon or Parker, given his injury, will be sold by Friday night’s deadline but they are set to be off-loaded at the first realistic opportunity, which could even be in January.
The revelation of Villas-Boas’ plans comes after he sanctioned the sales of established duo Michael Dawson and Brad Friedel, while fringe players such as Jermaine Jenas, David Bentley, Heurelho Gomes and Giovanni dos Santos have all been told they are surplus to requirements.

Race Incident Sees Republican Convention Expulsions

Two people were ejected from the Republican National Convention when they threw nuts at a black CNN camera woman and said "this is how we feed animals," the network said yesterday.
"CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum" on Tuesday, the opening day of a gala at which former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will accept his party's nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in November's election.
"CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment."
Several witnesses observed the exchange, CNN reported, and convention security personnel immediately removed the two people from the forum.
The convention confirmed the incident in a statement late Tuesday.
"Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated," organizers said.
The incident is surely not what Republicans wanted 10 weeks out from the election. Romney has struggled to attract African American voters as well as Hispanics, and he is also on the wrong side of the gender gap, with polls consistently showing women voters preferring Obama to Romney.
Current TV journalist and talk radio host David Shuster first tweeted about the incident Tuesday night.
"GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying 'This is how we feed animals,'" Shuster posted on Twitter.
