Woman tries to Save Her marriage by stealing a baby
A 40-year-old woman, Malama Halima, yesterday confessed that she stole a one month-old baby boy from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, to save her marriage. Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Dr Mohammed Alkali, who addressed newsmen on the matter said, “I can confirm to you that the stolen baby has re-united with his mother. Probably, the woman who stole the baby capitalized on the time given to visitors and relations of patients to visit, to steal the baby. Henceforth, the hospital’s management will enforce security measures to ensure that such an ugly incident does not repeat itself”.
Narrating her ordeal at the GRA police station in Bauchi, the woman, Malama Halima said, after her divorce, she decided to steal a baby boy in order to save her marriage. She lamented that though she has five daughters, her husband divorced her because she does not have a male child.
Halima added that when she took the baby home, her ex-husband refused to accept the baby, maintaining that he was not the one who fathered the child. She said when he demanded to know where she got the baby from, she had no choice but to confess.
“After I confessed to him, he advised me to return him and it was in the process of returning the baby that I was arrested”, Halima said.
The mother of the stolen baby, Mallama Hauwa, on her part said she gave birth to her baby on September 14th at the teaching hospital, but was yet to be discharged.
“On Monday October 15th, after the nurse on duty administered drugs on me, I went to the baby’s cot and did not see him. I thought that the nurse was attending to him, so I went to meet her, but she said the baby was not with her. It was at that point that we started looking for the baby,” she said.
Also speaking, the baby’s father, Sani Mohammed, a trader said, “We reported the matter at the GRA police station and with the help of Allah and prayers, the woman who stole our baby and her husband returned him to the hospital”.
Greenwich News learnt that when the baby could not be found, the nurse who was on duty was arrested. But chairman of the Bauchi State Nursing and Midwives Association, Alhaji Sagir, has expressed optimism that when investigation is concluded, the nurse on duty would be released.
“The woman who stole the baby has been arrested and the nurse on duty was not implicated in any way. Ours is a respected profession, we are involved in saving human lives, caring for the sick and we are proud of our members,” he said.

Horror: Man Kills wife by throwing her into a pit latrine
The Ogun Police Command on Tuesday in Abeokuta paraded a suspect for allegedly killing his wife by throwing her into a pit latrine over a misunderstanding.
Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, the state’s Commissioner of Police, told newsmen that the 46-year-old unemployed man committed the act on Oct. 7 at Agbado area of the state.
“The Agbado Division had a distress call that a man had pushed his wife into a deep pit; we quickly rushed to the scene where the victim was met dead in the pit.
“The suspect was immediately apprehended and we are still interrogating him; he will be charged to court as soon as we are done with our investigations,” Okoye said.
The command also paraded an 80-year-old man and his 64-year wife over an allegation of illegal possession of firearms.
Okoye said the couple were arrested on Oct. 13 after the police conducted a search on their house at No 21 Obarinwa street, Aiyegbami, Ago-Iwoye.
“The DPO of Ago-Iwoye, Stephen Iriavbijeh, got information that the couple’s son is a notorious robber and he led a team to conduct the search.
“On getting there, the suspect was not seen but while executing the search warrant, one cut-to-size gun, two locally made pistols and 16 live cartridges were recovered in his mother’s wardrobe.
“Thus, we arrested the two of them in whose possession we found the firearms for thorough interrogation,” he said.
Okoye appealed to members of the public to assist the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of criminals in the state.
The commissioner assured them that their identity would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
According to him, the police are working round the clock to ensure the safety of lives and property.
I watched them kill 24 Worshippers in Dogodawa - Chief Imam
Chief Imam of Dogodawa Community Mosque, Mahmud Mohammed, on Monday narrated how he hid himself in an abandoned tyre, watching how worshippers leaving the mosque were killed in Kaduna on Sunday.
Over 24 worshippers were reportedly killed while many were injured during the attack on mosque by suspected armed robbers at Dogodawa village in Birnin Gwari Local Government.
Mohammed said he saw over 100 heavily armed bandits shooting the worshippers.
“The killers were saying that they had come to make real their threat. They shot and killed even children, it was sad indeed,” he said.
A traditional title- holder of Danlawan Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Abdurauf, who blamed the police for the incident, said a governorship aspirant in the state, Alhaji Shuaibu Mikati, had earlier alerted the police to the threats to life and property in the area by robbers.
He said, “But nothing was done until the dawn attack on Sunday which has turned the entire area into deep sorrow and mourning.”
He said Mikati wrote a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, notifying him of the warning issued by unknown persons who had vowed to unleash terror on the area.
He said Mikati appealed to the police to upgrade the police post at Dogodawa to the status of a police station “but instead they gradually withdrew the six policemen that were stationed at the police post and that led to the closure of the police post”.
He also said four members of the vigilance group were identified by the gunmen and killed during the raid.
Meanwhile, Patrick Yakow has said will summon an emergency meeting of the state security council to strategised on how to drive away criminals from Birnin Gwari.

Who will be Unilag's next VC?
The race for the position of the vice-chancellor, VC, University of Lagos, Unilag, Akoko, is getting hot after the institution’s Governing Council declared the post vacant.
The Council’s resolution followed the expiration of the six-month tenure of the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ramon Ade Bello. Bello’s appointment was necessitated by the sudden death of the former VC, Professor Tokunboh Sofoluwe, who died of a Cardiac arrest.
According to the university’s rules, an acting appointee to the office of VC shall serve a non-renewable term of six-months only. Based on Council’s decision, a search was inaugurated among the members of the University Senate to shop for an eligible candidate.
Greenwich News gathered that over 12 aspirants are jostling for the plum post, including Bello and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Babajide Alo, both of who are believed to be the real contenders. Before his temporary appointment, Bello was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Management Services, while Alo served in his present capacity.
However, a rule banning aspirants without a ten-year post-professorial calling has led to grumblings among them. According to information posted on the university’s website, an eligible candidate must be “a professor of not less than 10 years in one of the disciplines offered by the University of Lagos and not more than 65 years old”.
But a number of the academics have flayed the rule, stating that it was a move to deliberately shut them out.
“We have competent, vibrant and prolific professors who have served in various capacities, as heads of departments, Deans and directors within the university environment, who are affected by the rule. It is undemocratic,” said a professor who would not want his name mentioned.
But Professor Olaide Abass, Chairman, Unilag Alumni, rebutted the allegation of undemocratic practice in the process.
He said: “The university council took the decision in order to get someone with quality and tested experience. Someone who stands out in the society can attract funds and speak for us at international fora.
“You have to consider the age of the university against the age of professorial attainment of a candidate. Someone who must lead a 50-year old institution, like ours, must be of proven experience in various capacities and exhibited great integrity.”
Feelers from Unilag have narrowed the contest to the two leading candidates, Bello and Alo. A number of staff who volunteered information on the two candidates tend to favour Bello, who they said is more popular with staff and takes issues concerning their welfare seriously.
“I must state honestly that the two of them are eminently qualified. But beyond that, Bello has shown to everyone, particularly junior members of staff that he can run a system that is rancour-free and, more so, effectively.
“Many of the frivolous cases the university spends huge money on are gradually being settled one way or the other. And very importantly, he has no blemish and does not belong to any camp or group on the campus. I am sure he would end up being the only candidate if the screening panellist were to scrutinize records and run an integrity test on each of the candidates. Everyone will know what we are talking about when we get to that point,” said a management staff, who preferred anonymity.
Gummen Kill 20 Islamic Worshipers in Kaduna
Gunmen opened fire on Muslim worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in Dogo Dawa, Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area, about 100 kilometres from Kaduna, Kaduna State on Sunday.
At least 20 of the worshippers were killed while scores of others were injured in the attack that took place around 5.30am.
Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, a source told our correspondent that the gunmen were on reprisal after some of them were identified by the villagers.
The source said the bandits had earlier notified the community through a letter that they were coming to attack them on an unstated date.
The source, who craved anonymity said, “Sometimes ago, there were a series of robberies in the area, especially along the Kaduna/ Birnin Gwari Highway. Some women were even raped in the process. So, a committee was set up to help find out those responsible and put an end to it. The committee did a good job as they were able to identify some of those responsible for the robberies and other criminal activities in the area.
“A former Hakimi (District Head) in Dogo Dawa was in charge of the committee that was responsible for sanitising the area and that was why, in the last three month, there was no robbery in the area as the people were able to identify the criminals and they were being silently eliminated one after the other.
“Many of the criminals must have fled the village when they discovered that they no longer had a base there.
“But this (Sunday) morning, they came back and went to the house of the man they suspected to be responsible for identifying them. They killed him and two of his children and cut off the hand of his wife. They also killed 17 other people in the village. I learnt that those people they killed were just coming from the early morning prayers.
“I can confirm to you that it was not a robbery operation, but it was the criminals themselves that came for a reprisal because the people have been identifying them.”
Also, the traditional ruler and councillor of Birnin Gwari, a neighbouring LGA, Abdullahi Muhammad, told Reuters that the attack was most likely carried out by a local criminal gang.
He said, “We are suspecting a reprisal by gangs of armed robbers, who lost some of their members after a recent exchange of fire with the villagers and the vigilantes.
“The village had been terrorised by an armed group operating from camps in the forest. These armed men mostly attack villagers and motorists along the busy Kaduna–Lagos highway.”
But, the Commissioner, Kaduna State Police Command, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, who also described that attack as a reprisal by some robbers, added that 12 people were killed.
Disclosing that the villagers killed two of the criminals, he dispelled rumours that people died in a Mosque at Dogodawa village.
“From what I heard, some villagers arrested armed robbers, then some robbers came back today (Sunday) and killed 12 people in a reprisal. But the villagers killed two of them. The rumour going round that 20 people were killed while coming from a mosque is not true, but I will get back to you when I get full details,” he told our correspondent.
He said that policemen in the state had moved to the scene of the killings to get the full details of what happened.
Kaduna State, like other states in northern Nigeria, has been under attacks by the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, which targets security forces, government officials and Christian worshippers.
Kaduna had also been plagued by religious conflicts which had many times resulted in violence.
Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order on Sunday confirmed an early morning explosion along Bama Road in Maiduguri, Borno State.
JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, told newsmen in Maiduguri that there was no casualty.
“It is true that we had a blast along Bama Road in the early hours on Sunday. The truth is that there was no casualty,’’ he said.
Musa said that the bomb was planted on the road in anticipation of the JTF patrol vans.
“They were probably targeting our patrol vans or other civilians. But fortunately, the bomb went off without hitting any target.’’
Musa appealed to residents of the state to be vigilant and report suspicious objects to the JTF promptly.

Fans Urge Eagles To Sustain Performance
Some football fans on Saturday in Abuja advised the Super Eagles to
sustain their current level of performance at the 2013 African Cup of
Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.
The Eagles beat Liberia’s Lone Star 6-1 at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in
Calabar on Saturday to qualify for the competition.
Some of the fans spoke in separate interviews in reaction to the win, a second leg match in the final round of the 2013 AFCON qualifiers.
Secretary of Nigerian Women Professional League (NWPL), Danlami Alanana, said the players did Nigerians proud with their performance which gave them an 8-3 aggregate win.
He however advised that they should further convince many football followers that they did not qualify on a platter of gold.
“They did Nigerians proud and I hope they will sustain their performance in the course of the competition in South Africa.
“This is because it is not just about playing Liberia and qualifying for the competition.
“All we want now is for the players to show the world that they did not qualify on a platter of gold.
“They should improve on their performance so that we can be a force to reckon with, once again, in football,’’ Alanana said.
He however commended the efforts of the team’s overseas-based players and advised the technical crew to be more tactical and help the players to remain focused.
“The foreign-based players really proved their worth and you will discover that they really brought about some difference in the game.
“I will say their call-up was justified to a large extent, because the level of the game was high and they showed high level of seriousness.
“I want to advise the technical crew that they should not relax in their work, because this is just the beginning and the crew has to be more tactical,’’ Alanana, who is a staff of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), said.
A football coach in the FCT, Maruf Adeyemo, said the Eagles should always show more seriousness and determination during any game.
He said he would be expecting the team to display such quality at the AFCON finals in South Africa next year.
“They (the Eagles) played a good game. But based on what they played, they were too confident of winning and I think we should not toy with this kind of game next time.
“I commend coach Stephen Keshi’s effort of blending the home-based players with their overseas-based counterparts.
“If you look back at the first leg game in Liberia which had ended 2-2 last month, it was basically a team of the home-based, while today’s is a blend of the two.
“A Sunshine Stars player and a Warri Wolves defender also played in the defence, and this shows that the coach has confidence in the Nigerian League.
“As for me, a Nigerian player is a Nigerian player as long as you can restore the lost glory for this country and be able to justify being called to play,’’ Adeyemo said.
A youth corps member, Felix Nwagwu, said the Eagles should improve on converting their scoring chances to goals.
“They missed a lot of scoring chances, even though they won. But they played a very good game and they were composed.
“But they should have scored more goals than they did. They should be more focused.
“They also need to change the attitude we saw in somebody like Victor Moses, who in spite of playing well was complacent towards the end of the match.
“He was no longer serious as the game went towards its end, because he felt his side was winning. But no matter how small a team is, they should never be underrated.
“Our players should play all games to the best of their ability and not take any chances at all.
“However, I commend the other players, especially the overseas-based ones. It appears that when they are invited to play crucial matches like this one, they will give their best performance,’’ he said.
The 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa will hold from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10.
