WHAT would have been a violent communal clash between Uduerhe and Ekredjebor communities in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, was, Monday, averted by men of the Ughelli ‘B’ Police Division and military Joint Task Force, JTF.The crisis, Greenwich News gathered, was over a dispute between Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Olorogun Jaro Egbo and some youths of Ekredjebor community, over alleged demand for development levy from Egbo, a native of Uduerhe.
A source said the Ughelli monarch, HRM Oharisi II, and other prominent chiefs had waded into the matter, calling on both sides to sheath the sword.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that some armed Ekredjebor youths went to the residence of the governor’s aide to demand for development levies.
He said: “It took the quick intervention of soldiers and the Police to arrest the situation, which otherwise would have had casualties on both sides. The Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’Division invited both parties to resolve the issue with the Area Commander.”
When contacted on phone, Egbo said the palace and the police were resolving the matter. He said: “As a leader and a traditional palace chief, I will explore all avenues before taking the matter to higher level and justice will be served at the end of the day.”
Meanwhile, Pastor and General Overseer of All Saints Pentecostal Ministry in Ekredjebor-Ughelli, Rev. Israel Unutame, has been kidnapped.
Rev. Unutame was reportedly kidnapped on Sunday on his way to church. According to a close family source, the pastor was seriously beaten before he was whisked away to an unknown destination.
The family source, who pleaded anonymity said the kidnappers, who came in a Toyota Camry, left with the 2006 model Toyota camry car of the pastor, whom they intercepted by his gate.
At press time, his abductors were yet to establish contact with the family.
