Security Experts to Doctors: Prepare For More Bomb Blast Victim Patients

President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has urged medical doctors in the country to improve their skills towards treatment of victims of bomb explosions and other violence.

Ekhomu explained that due to rising insecurity in the country, more casuality would be recorded, saying the doctors needed to be prepared for the types of injuries that were usually caused by bombs and other weapons of mass destruction.

A statement on Tuesday in Lagos said Ekhomu spoke during the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State branch in Abeokuta.

He said, “An explosion would produce thermal injuries, blast injuries and kinesic injuries. Victims closest to the bomb seat would suffer severe thermal injuries as well as blast injuries.

“The blast shock waves affect the cells in the body and result in extensive organ damage and internal bleeding. Kinesic injuries include contusions, abrasions, and multiple fractures.”

Ekhomu stated that insecurity had negative effect on victims and the population at large.

He said, “Sources of insecurity include Boko Haram terrorist bombings, armed robberies using IEDs, rocket launchers, hand grenades and other weapons of mass murder, communal clashes including Fulani herdsmen attacks, political violence, religious violence, kidnappings, assassinations, militancy, cultism among others.”

He urged the doctors to strengthen medical infrastructure to cope with the increase in demand for medical services due to increase in acts of violence.
