Nigeria's Hopes For an Olympic Medal Further Fades as Chukwumerije Crashes Out
Hopes for a last-minute medal for Nigeria became dimmer on Saturday as one of its top athletes, Uche Chukwumerije, lost out in the Taekwondo event on Saturday at the London 2012 Olympics.
Chukwumerije, who won bronze at the last Olympics in Beijing, was defeated by just a single point Cuban Robelis Despaigne in the Men’s +80 kg category.
He lost the point with just 23 seconds to go in the final third round.
Chukwumerije stands a chance to have a shot at the bronze medal fight, only if Despaigne wins his next game and advances to the finals.
Meanwhile, in the 84kg Wrestling freestyle competition, Nigeria’s Andrew Adibo Dick was defeated by JY Espinal.
Dick trailed by as much 7-0 in the first round, and was no match for his opponent who eliminated him in the second round.
Next medal hope will be on Nigeria’s 4×400 metres women’s relay team, who takes to the tracks later today.
