The Nassarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura’s and his son, were involved in a fatal accident that left the son badly hurt and claimed the lives of three of the governor’s aide.The accident occurred on Sunday evening as the Governor’s convoy travelled along the Nassarawa- Toto highway.
The governor’s son, Umar Kalli, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, before being transferred to an undisclosed hospital n Abuja.
Those killed on the spot are Mr. Al-Makura’s personal assistant, popularly known as Zaki; a police officer attached to the governor’s son; and the driver of the vehicle in which they were travelling.
A witness said the victims were in a Toyota Hilux van, when the driver lost control because diesel had spilled on the highway and caused the surface of the road to become slippery. The driver rammed into an oncoming truck and three casualties died on the spot.
The governor had travelled to Umaisha town in Toto Local Government Area where he had gone to deliver relief materials to some flood victims. He was returning when the accident occurred.
Earlier in June, Mr. Kalli was reportedly arrested in Malaysia for drug abuse and gun running.
Sources say that the governor had to journey to Malaysia to get his son released.
It is not clear if the son, who was a student at the Nassarawa State University, Keffi, is still studying or returned to work with his father.
