Fire Breaks Out At Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos

Information available to Greenwich News indicate that there was a fire outbreak at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, this morning.
An eyewitness said the fire emanated from some electric cables, which apparently melted under heat.
This led to a blackout in the airport terminal, while fire fighters deployed swiftly in the affected area to quench the inferno.
The fire fighters were able to put the situation under control while security men erected a metal barricade around the site.

Manchester United to Face Real Madrid as Arsenal draws Bayern Munich In the UEFA Champions League last 16.

Barcelona versus AC Milan and Manchester United against Real Madrid were the pick of the ties in the Champions League last 16 draw on Thursday, as the knock-out phase of this year’s competition took shape.

Perennial favourites Barcelona, champions in 2009 and 2011, are currently nine points clear in La Liga but received a hammer blow on Wednesday when it was revealed coach Tito Vilanova must undergo surgery after cancer returned to his salivary gland.

His assistant, Jordi Roura, has been placed in temporary charge.”Yesterday (Wednesday) was a very hard day, a tough blow,” said Barca captain Carles Puyol in comments posted on the club’s official Twitter feed.

“Tito gave us strength, already talked about coming back. Personally, I’m happy about facing Milan. Not because it’s an easy opponent but because it’s a team I’ve always liked.”

Barcelona and Milan locked horns four times in last season’s competition, with Barca finishing above Massimiliano Allegri’s side in the group phase and then prevailing 3-1 on aggregate when they met again in the last eight.

United’s tie with Madrid will see Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo face his former club for the first time since leaving Old Trafford for the Spanish capital in 2009.

The sides last met in 2003, when a famous hat-trick in Manchester by Ronaldo — Cristiano Ronaldo’s Brazilian predecessor and namesake — gave Madrid a 6-5 aggregate quarter-final win.

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has only lost two of his 14 previous encounters with Alex Ferguson’s side, and United club secretary John Alexander admitted the club would have preferred a more gentle draw.

“Everyone wanted to keep this for later in the competition but, out of several stand-out ties, I think this is the one,” he told British television channel Sky Sports News.

“If history has anything in our favour, our one victory against Real Madrid in this competition was in the season when we won the final at Wembley (in 1968).”

Former Madrid player and club director Emilio Butragueno said: “I’m sure it’s going to be a special game for Ronaldo.

“He’s a great professional so I’m sure he’s going to do his best to help Real Madrid qualify for the next round, but going back there will be special for him.”

Arsenal were drawn against last season’s beaten finalists, Bayern Munich, who have constructed a nine-point lead in the Bundesliga after a storming start to the season.

“We know Arsenal well,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“That’s fortunate and we can be happy about the draw. The game won’t be a foregone conclusion and we should not under-estimate Arsenal.”

Meanwhile, Celtic’s reward for reaching the knockout phase for the first time since 2007-08 is a rendezvous with Italian champions Juventus.

“In terms of glamour, it is great,” Celtic coach Neil Lennon told Sky Sports News.

“In terms of qualification it is going to be very tough. But we will take it as it comes and our supporters will be looking forward to this match.”

Big-spending French club Paris Saint-Germain will take on Valencia, with German champions Borussia Dortmund slated to face their Ukrainian counterparts Shakhtar Donetsk.

In the remaining ties, competition debutants Malaga tackle Porto and Turkish outfit Galatasaray meet German side Schalke.

In a remarkable quirk, the draw for the matches in February and March produced exactly the same ties as had been drawn in Wednesday’s rehearsal.

Champions League last 16 draw:

Galatasaray (TUR) v Schalke 04 (GER)

Celtic (SCO) v Juventus (ITA)

Arsenal (ENG) v Bayern Munich (GER)

Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) v Borussia Dortmund (GER)

AC Milan (ITA) v Barcelona (ESP)

Real Madrid (ESP) v Manchester United (ENG)

Valencia (ESP) v Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)

FC Porto (POR) v Malaga (ESP)

Man demand N1.2m refund from wife’s parents for starving him of sex

Malam Mukailu Naibi of Keke Village, Kaduna, whose wife allegedly starved him of sex for two years, on Wednesday demanded N1. 2 million as compensation from the wife’s parents before an Abuja Area Court.

Naibi, while testifying at the resumed hearing of the case, told the court that the amount, covered the bride price he paid before marrying Maryam, his wife.

He also told the court that the amount also covered the cost of damages done to the house after Maryam allegedly set the house on fire before fleeing to court to seek divorce.

He also tendered written documents with records of all expenses made on his estranged wife and her parents, in addition to a witness to testify in his favour.

Naibi, aged 37, had told the court that his wife had refused to make love to him since they got married two years ago.

He also accused her of setting their house on fire.

“Your Worship, since we got married two years ago, my wife never allowed me to make love to her for once and all my attempts to do it always led to fighting.

“I married her out of love and I still love her, but with this development, I have no choice, but to ask the court to grant her divorce wish for the sake of peace,” Naibi said.

In her testimony, Maryam, who is 16 years old told the court that her husband made love to her once, but that she was not impressed and so she wanted a divorce.

“I don’t love him, I don’t love anybody who bears his name and I hate anybody who loves him,” she told the court.

Maryam’s mother who was her only witness in court denied most of Naibi’s claims but admitted some, saying that Maryam’s father was in a better position to clarify some issues.

The Judge, Haruna Masanawa, after hearing all the submissions of the parties in the case, ordered the court’s registrar to summons more witnesses, including Maryam’s father.

He adjourned the case to Jan. 16, 2013 for further hearing.

Okonjo-Iweala's Mother's Kidnap: Two policemen Arrested

Commissioner Ikechukwu Aduba said the policemen had been arrested on suspicion of having aided the kidnappers.

“It is a very sad development and our major concern now is to rescue Mama unhurt,” Aduba told Reuters by phone.

Mr Aduba further denied any knowledge of ransom being demanded by the kidnappers.

“I’m not aware the kidnappers are demanding ransom and even if they are, the police cannot get involved as that would be a signal for others to continue (abductions),” Aduba said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Police Affairs; Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (RTD.) has instructed Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar to deploy Special Police Officers from the Force headquarters, Abuja to assist in locating and freeing Prof. Okonjo from her captors.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop on ‘Budgeting for Effective Policing in Nigeria ’, the minister said: “It is a very disturbing issue and in unraveling this matter, the police must take into cognisance that we have a role to let others know that such incidents will be given equal treatment. It could have been the mother of anybody’.

“Already, the IGP has deployed his men and they are working round the clock on the issue. The IG is on top of the situation. However, I have instructed the IGP to deploy specialist officers from Abuja if need be to help in fishing out the culprits”.

The palace of the Obi of Ogwuashi-Uku has been surrounded by policemen since the abduction on Sunday.

Police said someone purporting to be one of the kidnappers phoned on Monday to make some demands, but it was impossible to say whether the call was genuine.

“We have to identify the source of the call … Anybody can make spurious calls and demands,” said Delta State police spokesman Sergie Ezegam, without giving details of who was contacted or what was demanded.

“We still don’t know the reason for her abduction. What we know is that this is a crime, the woman’s life is in danger and we are making frantic efforts to rescue her,” he added.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has received threats in the past, her special adviser Paul Nwabuikwu said on Sunday.

Actress Dorothy Njemanze Harassed by Abuja Environmental Officials Who branded her a Prostitute

An Abuja-based actress, Dorothy Njemanze, Thursday alleged that she was assaulted by officials of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) in collaboration with Society Against Prostitution and Child Labour along Usuma Street, off Gana, Maitama Street, Abuja.
The actress, who is the president of Dorothy Njemanze Foundation, told journalists at an event to commemorate the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women that she was going about her business when the men attacked her in the middle of the night thinking she was a prostitute. She added that it was the second time she was assaulted by the same groups.

“My driver went to NNPC filling station to cue up and I went in to Tucano for a meeting and to sign a document and on my way out, I was assaulted by these officials. If not for the fuel queues I would have been in my house earlier, she said in tears.

“The fact that you have more armed robbers doesn’t make all men armed robbers, so why should every woman be labelled a prostitute?

“The most terrible part is that they take you to a rehabilitation centre under suspicion of prostitution which is wrong and for the past two years, I have been trying to draw people’s attention to the fact that what goes on is a random abduction and gross violation of women and I encourage everybody to join hands and let’s stop all these,” she said.

Reacting to the allegation, Head of AEPB’s Information, Joe Ukairo, said Dorothy has never visited their office for discussion, dialogue or to be properly briefed on the board’s mandate but chose to use various media platforms in a very antagonistic and unethical manner to incite the public and jeopardize the good intention of government.

“I personally think she is looking for cheap publicity and if she is trying to make an impact, she should go back to the drawing board. I don’t think her approach is in the best interest of the society at large. I have read different versions of her story on the social media and I realize she is not sincere.

“The Board sees her approach as unethical, not well intended and inimical to the larger society and we cannot allow that. I admit we may have one or two bad eggs in the system or may need to fine tune

some part of our operational strategies, all these can be worked on as no system is perfect,” he said.

Manchester City is Better Than Manchester United - Mancini

Roberto Mancini believes Manchester City are a better team than Manchester United, despite trailing their rivals in the Premier League title race.

A 3-2 derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday has left City six points adrift of their neighbours approaching the busy festive period.

City proved last season they cannot be underestimated, as they snatched the crown in the most dramatic of circumstances, but United are determined to ensure history does not repeat itself.

Mancini is aware his side face a tough task in their efforts to mount a successful defence of their title, but feels City are still the best side in England, regardless of what the standings may suggest.

He said: "Things aren't going well but I know we will still have a great year.

"United have more experience but we have a much better team and play much better football.

"Six points is not a big difference with 24 games still to play.

"We need to try and win five or six games in a row to try and reduce the gap."
Mancini added: "Even though we lost on Sunday, we showed we are a really strong team and can win the title again.

"We were unlucky. We dominated long spells of that game and did not deserve to lose.

"The Premier League is the best campaign in the world at the moment and as we know from winning last year, you can lose a game in the last second."

Woman dies after SSS shot her 3 Sons in one day

Evangelist Helen Ukpabio's mother, Mrs Etim Ukpabio, has passed on months after witnessing the killing of three of her sons...on the same day. She also lost a daughter a few days later who died from shock after learning about what happened to her brothers.

Mrs Ukpabio's three sons, Joseph, Charles and Emmanuel Ukpabio (pictured above) were allegedly killed by men of the State Security Service (SSS) on Sunday March 25th 2012 in front of their aged mother, who family members say never recovered from the incident.
It will be recalled that the killing which was a culmination of a well-laid plan started on March 24, when three anonymous white men came to Mbente Village in Nkari clan, Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, the village where the decased, Emmanuel and Joseph, lived. They (white men) came in the company of one of one Benjamin Christopher Akpan Otu from Ifa village of the same clan. The three white men allegedly came on a courtesy visit, inviting youth leaders of the clan to come for a meeting concerning a dam that is to be constructed on their land.

Joseph Akpabio, one of the youth leaders, invited people in the village to welcome the visitors. The visitors requested for a formal meeting the next day. The youths had no idea that Benjamin, whom they consider a friend and who escorted the white men was a bait and that the other men in the white men’s entourage were actually SSS operatives. The next day’s rendezvous was fixed at Ikot Ekpene, which is about one hour drive from Nkari clan.

Benjamin, further suggested to Joseph that the meeting should be in his wife’s house at Ikot Ekpene. Joseph unwittingly accepted. The “Judas” went ahead by calling the Akpabio elder brother, Charles, a sailor who resided in Calabar, and informed him of the meeting. The latter called his brother to confirm it. To forclose any suspicion, the scheming Benjamin and his white men invited a few other youths, who were executives of the Nkari Youth, one Solomon Udoette, two others from other villages in Nkari and also the last of the Akpabio brothers, Emmanuel.

The next day March 25, the invited youth leaders left for the meeting not knowing they were on their way to their death. Joseph the host of the meeting bought drinks and prepared snacks for the coming visitors. He went the extra mile by asking his wife to buy petrol so that they could put on light and fan while the meeting lasted. The white men and their escort, Benjamin, called Joseph Akpabio to be sure he was there. They also confirmed whether his elder brother Charles, who lived in Calabar would make the meeting and the still-unsuspecting Joseph told them he was on his way.

Before long they were all assembled in Joseph’s compound. The mysterious white men came in a truck driven by one Toppa, who incidentally was a friend to the younger Akpabio, Joseph. Also in attendance was Benjamin Christopher Akpan.

Shortly into the meeting, the white men called for an interlude so they could hold a brief discussion among themselves outside. Just as they stepped out, the generator went off. The host’s wife who went out to check the cause of the power outage was confronted by about 20 policemen who all wore black T-shirts. She witnessed the final betrayal as the white men shook hands with the leader of the squad, a certain Noel Nduka before they departed.

Then the nightmare unveiled. The policemen rushed into the house rounded up those inside, handcuffed them and herded them into their trucks. Thereafter, the true intention of the meeting began to unfold as Benjamin Christopher Otu who was also handcuffed had his own handcuffs released and he suddenly began to discuss freely with the police. The police wasted no time in showing that they meant business: they shot all the six young men in their knees. Then the bizarre happening began to take the shape of a vendetta, as the Judas, Benjamin, replied that they should “go and shine in the grave”, when questioned by his friend Joseph about what crime they had committed to deserve such a treatment.  With the traitor acting as their guide, the police drove their victims to their village allegedly to find the father of Emmanuel, Charles and Joseph with the intention to kill him also.

When the death squad got to the village, they gave their traitor guide a mask to cover his face so as to hide his identity. Back to the very compound where the meeting was held the previous day, the policemen stormed the house searching for Chief Essien. However, their quarry was not at home. As they ransacked the whole house, breaking down locked doors, the masked accomplice (Benjamin) led them on with sign language, directing them to pressurize the Akpabio’s mother, madam Atim to produce her husband. When that failed, they dragged out two of their victims Charles (whose broken legs had been tied wit rafia ropes) and Joseph and dumped them by plantain trees. The two elderly women, one, their 72-year-old  mother, the other their uncle’s wife, aged 82 years cried, begged the policemen to set them free and to tell them what their crimes were. At that point Joseph did manage to tell his mother that Benjamin had set them up using the dam project.  The two boys were shot before the very eyes of their mother and their uncle’s wife while their other brother, Emmanuel, and the other three young men were taken away.

Later, Benjamin confided in one Peter Ekpenyong Inuaeyen that the four boys who were not killed were being detained at the State Police headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia. He also gave out some phone numbers which include that of Noel Nduka, the SSS officer who allegedly shot the brothers.
When a call was put through to him, Nduka allegedly confirmed that he killed the three brothers, claiming that they were terrorists. According to reports, when asked about whom they had terrorized, the SSS operatives was alleged to have claim that he has the right to kill anybody he is asked to kill.

How the other captives met their end gave a picture of a mindless cruelty. By the next day, March 26, the remaining four young men who were still alive—Emmanuel Akpabio, Solomon Udoette and two others – were driven to Obot Akara and then shot at the boundary of Nto Edino and Obot Akara at about 1a.m. of March 27, 2012. Benjamin, the Judas, again called his confidant, Peter Ekpenyong Inuaeyen and told him that “all are gone”.

Noel Nduka, later told a local newspaper that the police team encountered some robbers who operated between Abia State and Akwa Ibom and had killed all four of them.

Meanwhile, two weeks before the tragedy, Benjamin, the deceiver, came with his accomplice, Toppa, and told the late Joseph of how the youths of the land were vandalizing the property and equipment for the dam. Benjamin insisted that since Joseph is the youth president he should call Charles to accompany him to go and pick some of those things for safety. Charles later told his wife that Benjamin did a strange thing by filming them with his camera phone while they were doing that. Today, the police are using what Benjamin recorded as their evidence to the fact that the boys have been stealing from the dam.

Killed and abandoned by the road, efforts made by the family of Chief Essien Akpabio to have the corpses of the murdered young men buried decently had been futile. A lawyer, who went to see the DPO of Obot Akara, was sent back empty-handed by the recalcitrant police boss.

Reports say the old woman died a very unhappy woman sometime last month and kept begging people to help her get justice for her children.

Woman Arrested After the Tugs She Sent To Beat Up Her Boyfriend Kills Him

A 22-year old woman, Mrs. Tawa Rawan, has landed in big trouble. That was after she sent thugs to beat up her secret lover, Akeem Ganiyu, 25, at their Bariga area, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, over a disagreement.
The thugs misfired and instead of beating up Ganiyu, as directed by Rawan, they ended up killing him after inflicting several machete cuts on his body. She was arrested by the police for her alleged involvement in the murder.
The police also arrested her accomplices, identified as Joshua Damilola, 27, Akintude Sodiq, 25 and 17-year old Ismaila Riliwan. The fourth accomplice, Abiodun Adeleke, is on the run.
The incident happened at the victim’s house at 91, Arobadele Street, Bariga Lagos.

Narrating the incident, Rawan, mother of two kids, said she had a quarrel with the deceased and he slapped her and took away the money she made from bread sales.
According to her, she contacted those men to help her recover her money and to avenge the assault on her and not to kill Ganiyu. She said she was still shocked that he was killed in the process.
On her relationship with the late Ganiyu, she said he was her lover and that she is from Oyo State and married to another man with kids.

Greenwhich gathered that while she was still with her husband, she was also dating other men, including Ganiyu secretly.
On the day of the incident, she said that the late Ganiyu assaulted her and since she could not overpower him, she went and brought the suspects who eventually murdered him.
According to her, she actually sent those men to harrass and beat Ganiyu up and not to kill him.
“I did not ask them to kill him, only to harass and beat him. I later learnt that they killed him with a machete,” she said.

One of the suspects, Damilola, told newsmen that they did not intend to kill him, but used the machete after he attacked them with bottle.
“We went to ask him his problem with Rawan. Instead of anwering us, he snatched a broken bottle and stabbed me,” he stated.
He said he went to the bread factory and brought a machete and inflicted injury that resulted in Ganiyu’s death.
He also described Rawan as one of his customers at the bakery.
“I am at a loss on what to do and I don’t know how I am going to get out of this,” he cried at the station.
Another suspect, Sodiq, confessed that Rawan was also her lover but that he did not take part in the fighting.
When journalists visited the victim’s residence in Bariga, the late Ganiyu’s sister expressed shock over the death of his brother and said that she had left everything in the hands of God.
A witness told reporters that the late Ganiyu sustained several injuries on his body following the machete attack on him, adding that he died because he lost too much blood.
The body has been deposited at the Gbagada General Hospital for autopsy.

At the SCID, where the matter was transferred, Greenwich News gathered that the matter was being investigated by the same officer who investigated a murder case against a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Lagos.
Police sources also told reporters that the suspects would soon be charged to court for conspiracy and murder.
Ganiyu’s sister, Nafisat Ismail, who sells bread at his 91, Arobadade residence, demanded for the release of her brother’s corpse so that he could be given a decent burial like a true Muslim.
She said their aged parents who are farmers in Iseyin, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, were in support of her decision because as a Muslim, Akeem’s burial should not be unnecessarily delayed.

12 Top Christmas Internet Scams to watch out for

Online Christmas shopping is expected to grow 22.4 percent alone this year to as much as $146 billion.

ICTCatalogue.com compiled together, Top 12 christmas scams to watch out for during this holiday.

Social Media Scams — Scammers use Twitter and Facebook. Friend’s accounts can get hacked so watch for fake alerts that install “holiday deal” apps that steal private data. Twitter ads can lead to fake websites that look authentic but then ask for your credit card information.

Malicious Mobile Apps — An estimated 33 percent of apps ask for more information than they need such as access to your contacts or location. Be careful to check reviews on the smartphone’s store because a malicious app may be designed to steal your information or even send out premium-rate text messages without your knowledge.

Travel Scams — Phony travel webpages with beautiful pictures and rock-bottom prices are used to get you to hand over your financial details. The FBI recently warned travelers of a hotel Wi-Fi scam in which a malicious pop-up ad prompts computer users to install a popular software product before connecting to their hotel Wi-Fi.

Holiday Spam/Phishing — Spam emails will take on holiday themes advertising cheap Rolex watches and pharmaceuticals. Never click on the included links.

The New iPad, iPhone 5, And Other Hot Holiday Gift Scams — Phony ads and contests for the latest products will install malware or attempt to steal information.

Skype Message Scare — There is a new Skype message scam that attempts to infect computers and even hold your files for ransom. The threat appears as a Skype instant message with the scam line “Lol is this your new profile pic?”. If you click on the included link, a Trojan downloads onto your hard drive, blasts the dangerous link to all of your contacts, and can even try to extort money from some PC users to regain access to their files.

Bogus Gift Cards — Scammers will get you to “purchase” fraudulent gift cards that will not work.

Holiday SMiShing — “SMiSishing” is phishing via text message. The scammer tries to lure you into revealing information or performing an action you normally wouldn’t do by pretending to be a legitimate organization. Be wary of text messages that supposedly come from your bank and want you to verify personal information or visit a website.

Phony E-tailers – Phony e-commerce sites, that appear real, try to lure you into typing in your credit card number and other personal details, often by promoting great deals. For example, electronics repair store harborelectronics.net had a copycat store at harborelectronics.com that stole their credit cards.

Fake Charities — Scammers will copycat real charities such as the Red Cross. One man ran a bogus charity for the “U.S. Navy Veterans Association” and gathered $2 million from donors over five years!

Dangerous e-Cards — Most e-cards are safe, but there are some that will install trojan viruses. Make sure your family members are actually sending you e-cards and that the e-card comes from a well known legitimate source.

Phony Classifieds — Phony offers ask for too much personal information or ask you to wire funds via Western Union. If you’re going to purchase an item or apply for a job, try to do it in person in a public place. Pay in cash and never agree to pay for an item before receiving it.

Remember to have some sort of antivirus or anti-malware installed not only on your computer but also on your tablet or smartphone. These tips for discovering common internet scams should help you during the holiday shopping season. Merry Christmas!

Boko Haram Destroys 27 Schools in Yobe State

Boko Haram, in its onslaught on education and society in general, has destroyed 27 schools in Yobe and Borno states in the recent attacks, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command Thursday arrested eight people over a foiled bombing bid.
In a statement, it said that at about 0730 hours when some of its patrol men were heading to a duty post on Ring Road, a Golf taxi was following them from which an explosive was thrown into the police vehicle.
The policemen disembarked from their vehicle immediately, cordoned the area and apprehended the occupants of the Golf car, the statement said, adding that no injury was sustained during the operation.
On its part, the Nigerian Army confirmed that following the November 25 twin suicide bombing of a church inside the Jaji Military Cantonment, the military, Police and State Security Service (SSS) are stepping up “lots of successful operations” in Maiduguri (Borno), Damaturu (Yobe), Kano and Kaduna states aimed at rooting out terror cells and operatives of the Boko Haram and other violent groups.
The Army also confirmed that the same operation was already underway in Suleja, near the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja and that “a lot of bad guys are being arrested.”
According to the agency, 17 secondary schools and 10 Tsangaya (Islamic) schools at Damaturu, Potiskum, Fika and Gashua were among those torched.
Speaking in Maiduguri to journalists, NEMA’s North-East Information Officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, while assessing the level of destruction of the schools, said that relief materials would be distributed next week.
The Army explained that the redeployment of the Commandant, Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Abdullahi Kure and the Corps Commander, Infantry Corps Centre, Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Danhanne Isa was to enable the twin Boards of Inquiry (BoI) set up by both Defence and Army Headquarters to have “the right atmosphere for thorough investigations. The change was not a punishment but part of measures to enable a new hand to tackle lapses, shortcomings and limitations that would be identified in the course of investigations.”
While AVM Kure has been deployed to the Nigerian Air Force Holdings as Group Managing Director, Maj.-Gen. Isa is yet to be deployed.
Director of Military Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Tijani Jubril also confirmed that the BoIs have concluded their sitting but “the reports have not been submitted. The Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff are waiting for the reports.”
Jubril stated: “The incident (Jaji Cantonment twin bombing) is a very sad event. It is thus not surprising to witness the volume of reaction to the incident. Indeed, because of the negative effect of the terrorist attack, it became very expedient for the military authorities to immediately take necessary steps to contain these effects, reassure personnel and prevent reoccurrence. The Boards of Inquiry and changes in some appointments are inevitable steps.”
Jubril also told journalists at the Army Headquarters Abuja that the military and other security agencies are putting in place new measures and reviewing existing ones to ensure the security of lives and property around the country.
Such measures also include enforcement of rules on having only “legal dependants” living with military or civilian personnel in the barracks. Also, because of the porous nature of the barracks due to most of them not being fenced, all commanders have been directed to enforce stricter static and mobile patrols and improvement in checking persons or vehicles within the general area of barracks.
The DMI said the Army “is more concerned about measure being put in place and additional measures being taken. And some of the existing measures are being reviewed. It must be pointed out that earlier attacks on military barracks prompted the review of policies, measures and standards to be adopted in all military locations to prevent reoccurrence. Commanders at all levels were directed to adopt these measures in securing their areas of responsibilities.”
Jubril also decried insinuations by a Muslim interest group that “religious sentiments” were involved in the redeployment of AVM Kure and Maj.-Gen. Isa who are both Muslims and were replaced by Christians, saying that in February this year when an attack by the Boko Haram sect on 1 Division was carried out, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Maj.-Gen. Joseph Shoboiki (Christian) was replaced by Maj.-Gen. Garba Abdulwahab (Muslim). “Nobody then raised the issue of religious sentiments or connotations.”
Jubril also said that in the 82 Division of the Army, while the GOC, Maj.-Gen. Oluwaseun Oshinowo is Christian, all his Brigade and Battalion commanders are Muslims.
He restated that “the aim of Nigerian Army involvement (in the terror fight) is to defeat terrorists and other criminals and to ensure security of lives and property so that national developmental activities are carried out in peaceful atmosphere.”
The destruction of schools in Boko Haram’s campaign of terror yesterday drew the wrath of a non-governmental organisation, the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa, which warned the militant Islamist group against “hurting any of our members in your murderous activities.”
In a statement yesterday, NBM’s Head (Worldwide), Mr. Bemigho Eyeoyibo, said: “In the past we urged government to, using a carrot and stick approach, dialogue with Boko Haram to know their grievances. We may have to review our position in the light of Boko Haram’s indiscriminate killings, including children and other innocent people.
“NBM is a pan-Africanist organisation that believes in the unity of black people worldwide as a race with a common experience and destiny. Therefore, we do not take positions based on ethnic, religious, nationalist or other negative primordial considerations. But the bombing of religious or worship centres, schools, markets and other places where ordinary poor and exploited Africans are found in large numbers is reprehensible and provocative.
“The danger in these senseless terrorist acts is that members of equally militant or fearless groups may be killed thus creating more enemies for Boko Haram. We warn Boko Haram leaders against hurting any member of NBM because our ranks include Moslems, Christians and people of other faiths spread across all continents including the Arab and Islamic Nations.”

No tax should be imposed on the church. - Anglican Primate

Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, has faulted calls for the taxation of churches and mosques in the country.

The call, he said, was not justifiable and should be disregarded.

Okoh spoke on Saturday during the 14th Carnival for Christ and the 23rd anniversary of the Anglican Diocese of Abuja entitled ‘Experiencing the Resurrection Power’.

He spoke against the backdrop of a recent call by Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) that churches and mosques in the country should be taxed.

He said, “It has never been done, if there is an excess in one or two individuals. It is not a justification for government to impose taxes on the church. The church has never been a beneficiary of government allocation.

“The states gather together and share monthly allocation, no church has received any share.

“The church as a partner with government in progress actually has to be funded, because a lot of people are employed by schools and charity organisations run by the church. So, instead of government asking the church to bring money, it should be the one giving money to the church and supporting its programmes.”

On security challenges, Okoh said, “No amount of persecution can stop the church. In the past, there were many persecutions but they could not stop the church. The power behind the resurrection can not be stopped by any body.

“The church should not loose courage that God has abandoned them for persecutors to be bombing them. They can not overcome the church, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is what saved the world.”

Falana had, last week while reacting to the acquisition of a private jet by the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, said there was the need to start taxing religious institutions in the country.

The legal practitioner, who represented Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, at a workshop in Lagos, had expressed worry about the role of religious bodies in the fight against corruption.

He said, “If this is the case then, the tax authorities must extend their dragnets to all religious centres where substantial income is generated on a regular basis in the name of God. “The prosperity pastors, who are buying jets to preach the gospel to those who wallow in abject poverty should be assessed according to their wealth and be made to pay commensurate taxes”.

American Artist, Jamie Foxx, criticized for calling Obama "our lord and savior"

Jamie Foxx is drawing criticism for calling President Barack Obama "our Lord and savior" at the recent Soul Train Music Awards in Las Vegas.

During the show, Foxx took to the stage to praise Obama when he used the godlike terminology, E! News reports. "It's like church over here. It's like church in here. First of all, give an honor to God and our Lord and Savior Barack Obama," he said to the audience.

E! News notes that the Soul Train Awards aired Sunday night, but was filmed in Las Vegas just days after the president won reelection in November.

Foxx's comments incited furor in some Christian groups after the show aired on BET.

The president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the United States, Bill Donahue, released a statement regarding Foxx's "Lord and Savior" comment, referring to a 2011 red carpet interview in which the actor said he does not know what God means to him.

"Foxx’s epiphany is startling. It just goes to show that even though Obama did not succeed in stopping the oceans from rising (as he promised to do in 2008), he did succeed in convincing Jamie Foxx, and no doubt legions of others, that God exists," Donahue writes. "Whether God can survive an ACLU lawsuit accusing him of violating church and state grounds remains to be seen."

Radio host and Fox News commentator Mary Walter said the "Django Unchained" actor's reference may root back to reliance on government. "The intellectually superior don’t need the crutch of religion," she said on Fox News, according to Mediaite. "Those of us clinging to our guns and religion… we’re somehow less evolved. It’s about a societal religion as opposed to a church religion, because if the government gives you everything, the government becomes your religion, and he’s our leader.”

NewsBusters, which also blasted Foxx, has previously criticized Obama-as-God references in the media. The conservative blog chastised Newsweek editor Evan Thomas for saying that Obama is "standing above the country, above above the world, he's sort of God" during a 2009 interview.

Movie Makers Produce a Movie on Aluu 4.

Simony Productions, producers of Blackberry Babes have revealed they are producing a movie titled Aluu 4. The movie is expected to be a show of the event that took place in on October 5th morning in the Omoikiri community in Aluu, Rivers State where 4 Undergraduates were brutally murdered in the most gruesome way. Reports say the movie is already on set.
The plan to make the movie on the shocking event that shook the entire nation has attracted criticism from several Nigerians. Most Ngerians believe Idumota Marketers, where Simony Productions stems from, only care about making money and therefore the movie will not necessarily come as a tribute to the memory of the young men who lost their lives.
Others are wondering if enough research will be done to create such a critical real live event, suggesting, that the movie may turn out to be a mockery cooked out of materials gathered from mainly online sources.

Man pours acid on his girlfriend

A middle-aged man David Suleiman has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly pouring acid on his fiancée, Chika Egbo and a yet to be identified Okada rider at Ikotun area of Lagos State.

Suleiman who is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti,Yaba, Lagos, was said to have attacked his girl friend, a 300 level student at Enugu State College of Education, with acid for refusing him access to their only child.

Police sources at the state SCID, intimated newsmen that trouble began for the couple when Egbo became pregnant for Suleiman, and he abandoned her claiming that he travelled out of the country, and leaving her with the burden of fending for herself and the baby.

But few months after giving birth, he came back requesting to see the baby and he was refused.

Other Okada riders who drove by saw what was happening and the came to his rescue and they took Suleiman to Ikotun police station while the Okada rider and Egbo were rushed to a hospital.”

Meanwhile, Egbo, who is laying critically ill at the emergency unit of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, had her face, chest and some other parts of body destroyed by the acid bath.

Chelsea Fans Reject Their New Coach as they draw their first game after Di Matteo

"I have never heard in the history of the Premier League such a reaction to the appointment of a new manager as I have just heard from the Chelsea fans to Rafael Benitez. There were universal boos for the new boss." Said Jonathan Pearce, BBC Match of the Day commentator.

The pact of silence and subservience Chelsea's fans have made with owner Roman Abramovich ensured Rafael Benitez walked straight into a wall of hostility at Stamford Bridge.
Abramovich's decision to sack Roberto Di Matteo six months after winning the Champions League offended many Chelsea fans - but it almost qualified as a populist move compared to his replacement with Benitez.
Benitez's time at Liverpool made him a figure of derision and dislike at Chelsea. It was the result of an acrimonious rivalry with Jose Mourinho and his outwitting of "The Special One" in 2005 and 2007's Champions League semi-finals and the 2006 FA Cup semi-final, plus some barbs many of their supporters remember only too well.

This history meant the introductions were always going to be awkward when the interim manager met his new fans for the first time when Manchester City arrived at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
However much Benitez claimed he turned a deaf ear to his reception, nothing could have prepared him for the sound and fury that greeted him as he made his way through the tunnel to his place in the technical area prior to kick-off.

Chelsea have lost most of their capacity to surprise - but the venom aimed at Benitez carried an edge that was a shock even to those expecting the frostiest of welcomes.
And yet, while Benitez, received a warmer greeting from Manchester City's contingent than he did from Chelsea's fans, no voices were raised against Abramovich. No banners or chants suggesting the Russian was not welcome at Stamford Bridge. Nothing.

Abramovich dismissed Di Matteo and brought in Benitez - but any Roman revolt always stops short of the owner's executive box. This is the deal that has been made. If any of his behaviour meets with disapproval, it is suffered in silence for fear of causing offence.
So, during Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Manchester City, Stamford Bridge got as close to rebellion as it is ever likely to get but no anger could be heard rising up against Abramovich. The whole weight of the flak descended painfully on to Benitez.
The brutal truth is that so many Chelsea supporters have enjoyed so much of what Abramovich's money has brought and bought them in the shape of the Champions League, Premier League titles and FA Cups that his approach is simply accepted - and you suspect supporters of many other clubs who state their own disapproval and scorn would be exactly the same.

Analysis

Benitez, in certain situations, has a very thick skin but his suggestion he did not understand chanting that ranged from general disapproval to brutal abuse as he stood out in his technical area sounded very much like making the best of a very uncomfortable job. He would have to be constructed from stone not to have felt the impact of such personal criticism.
Stamford Bridge was a cacophony of jeering while the PA announcer, no shrinking violet with a microphone in his hands, struggled to make his point that a minute's applause was about to be observed for the late former Chelsea manager Dave Sexton.
Indeed, the show of respect for Sexton saved Benitez as attention rightly turned to the great old servant of Stamford Bridge rather than the unpopular new arrival.

Abramovich was as unmoved as ever as he looked on. If he cares about what he witnessed, no-one outside his inner circle will ever know - and Benitez was his shield anyway.
Benitez happily accentuated the positive of a clean sheet and a point against the champions but it was his opposite number Roberto Mancini who explained the only way Chelsea's new manager can reverse a popularity rating that is well into minuses: "Win, win, win, win, win...every game."
You would not place too much money on even this being enough to convince Benitez's detractors.
When a manager is not even given the first minute of his first game before being loudly and viciously acquainted with the disapproval of his own supporters, it is hard to see what he can actually do to win them over even before he tries to convince Abramovich to ditch the word "interim" from his title.
A banner draped from The Shed Stand read "Rafa Out - Fact." Posters held up stated: "In Roberto We Trusted And Loved. In Rafa We Will Never Trust. Fact." There were others.
The other fact is that Abramovich has chosen his man and no matter how loud the dissenters shout and whether they like it, they are stuck with him until the owner decides otherwise. This is the law at Stamford Bridge.

Frustrating start for Benitez

Of the nine managers making their debut for Chelsea under Roman Abramovich, Rafael Benitez became the third to not win. The Spaniard equalled Andre Villas-Boas in drawing, with Avram Grant being the only one to lose

In an undistinguished game, in which Manchester City were marginally the better side, Benitez's tactical side will take pleasure from a Chelsea team that looked reasonably well organised but there was little else to savour on a thoroughly joyless day all around.
And those hoping Benitez could offer instant restorative powers to his old Liverpool marksman Fernando Torres were to be disappointed. Perhaps his first question could be: "Why so sad Fernando?"
Torres simply looks a dejected and miserable figure and that is before you even analyse why the snap and threat has gone from his game. Benitez's Chelsea were clearly under orders to get the ball longer and faster to Torres - but it was a ploy greeted with more gratitude by Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany than the striker.
Benitez is likely to spend his early days introducing more pragmatism to Chelsea's play. He will be happy to sacrifice some of the gloss from the side Di Matteo was managing to ensure greater reliability and durability.
And then, with perhaps a tweak or two in January, it will simply be a matter of following the Mancini mantra of "Win, win, win, win, win...every game."
This is the deal Benitez has made with Abramovich - and the deal Chelsea's fans have made with Abramovich in exchange for success.

Gunmen Attack Police Headquarters Unit, in Abuja day After Kaduna Barracks Twin Bombing

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja was attacked early Monday morning by a group of unidentified gunmen.

The SARS HQ is one of the places Boko Haram suspects are normally held when transferred to Abuja.

The police however told reporters that the attack was repelled by the security operatives on duty.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it mirrors the style of the dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
This attack comes a day after a double suicide bombing killed 11 people in a church inside a military barracks in Kaduna state, north- central Nigeria.
A military source confirmed on Sunday that a bus entered the barracks and was driven into the wall of the Saint Andrews Protestant Church, where it exploded and ten minutes later another car blew up outside the church.

Though the first blast caused no casualties, the second blast however did as curious worshippers gathered around the scene of the first blast looking at the debris of the initial explosion.

I can contest for President In 2015 - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has told a Federal High Court that contrary to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, an incumbent president’s tenure in office can extend beyond four or eight years.
The president, who last Sunday said it was too early to discuss 2015 presidential election, disclosed this in response to a suit filed by a Port Harcourt-based lawyer and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Henry Amadi, who wants the court to declare that Mr Jonathan was no longer qualified to contest in 2015.

The plaintiff argued that allowing Mr Jonathan to contest in 2015 would amount to extending his tenure beyond the maximum period of two terms of four years envisaged by the 1999 Constitution.

A similar suit was filed by another member of the PDP, Cyriacus Njoku, who asked an Abuja High Court to stop Mr Jonathan from contesting the presidential election in 2015 on the grounds that he was already in his second term in office.

Judgment was yet to be entered in the said suit by the presiding Judge, Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi, long after he had earlier fixed November 13, 2012 date before adjourning the case sine dine (indefinitely) following his trip abroad.

In the present suit, the plaintiff joined Mr Jonathan and the Independent National electoral Commission (INEC) as co-defendants.

He specifically asked the court to stop Mr Jonathan from putting himself forward or participating as candidate for election to the office of the president at the end of his current term of office in 2015.

Mr Amadi also asked the court to direct INEC not to accept Mr Jonathan’s nomination as candidate of the PDP in 2015, saying by so doing, the president would hoist illegality in the polity since the oath of allegiance and office he would take if he won would violate the two oaths of allegiance and office stipulated by the 1999 Constitution.

But in the counter-affidavit filed on his behalf by Ade Okeaya-Inneh, President Jonathan asked the court to decline jurisdiction to entertain the case on the grounds that the plaintiff was an ordinary individual who was not qualified to request court to stop him from contesting 2015 presidential election.

“Under public law, an ordinary or a citizen or a taxpayer without more will generally not have locus standi as a plaintiff. This is because such litigations concern public rights and duties which belong to and are owed all members of the public including the plaintiff,” the president’s lawyer said.

The president contended that the plaintiff failed to disclose reasonable cause of action and that his claim before the court was hypothetical and academic. Mr Jonathan averred that he took the first oath of office on May 6, 2010 following the death of former president Umaru Musa Yar’adua.

“The question that arises for determination is whether, having regard to the facts of this case, he is in his first or second term. In other words, given that the constitution prescribes a maximum of two-term of four years each totalling a maximum of eight years as president, is he eligible to run for re-election in 2015?

“If yes, that would mean that, if he wins, he would be in office for a period of more than eight years.

“On the other hand, if the answer is no, that would mean that he, for no fault of his, would be constrained to serve for a period of less than eight years. “Given that between May 6, 2010 and May 28, 2011 he held office for the unexpired term of office of Yar’adua following the death of the later. Does the constitution contemplate that the period of about one year and three weeks would constitute his first term, a period of less than half of the constitutionally prescribed period of four years.’’

Mr Okeaya-Inneh further said: “in resolving this issue, the court is invited to make a determination whether the period of May 6, 2010 to May 28, 2011 wherein Jonathan occupied the office of the president can, in law, be regarded as one term of office and relevance of the oath of office Jonathan took on May 6, 2010 in computing the tenure of office of Jonathan in line with Sections 135 (1) and (2), 137 (1)(b), 140 (1) and (2) and 146(1) of the 1999 Constitution.”

He argued that it was better with the political situation of Nigeria for Jonathan to spend nine years in office than to spend less than eight years. “This approach is also consistent with the time honoured canon of interpretation to the effect that if confronted with two interpretations, one of which would abridge a person’s right and another which would maintain or enhance a person’s rights, the former constitution yields to the later.’’

Meanwhile, Justice Adamu Bello adjourned to 23 January 2013, for parties in the matter to adopt their processes and argument. He also granted the applications made by lawyers to Mr Jonathan and INEC to extend time within which to file their counter-affidavit and preliminary objections to the suit filed by lawyer to the plaintiff.

Arsenal Coach condemns Di Matteo's Sack as Benitez takes Over As Chelsea Coach

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger accused Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich of failing to show loyalty to Roberto di Matteo after the Italian was sacked just months after winning the Champions League.

Abramovich displayed his ruthless side once again on Wednesday as he axed di Matteo following a poor recent run that saw the Blues surrender their position on top of the Premier League and left them in severe danger of failing to reach the Champions League knockout stages.

But the decision surprised and saddened Wenger, who claimed di Matteo deserved more time to get things back on track after leading Chelsea to their first ever Champions League triumph, as well as winning the FA Cup, during his spell as caretaker boss last season.

“I find it surprising and very sad personally. I believe it is important on our side to show loyalty,” Wenger said after his side’s 2-0 Champions League win over Montpellier on Wednesday.

“Di Matteo came in in a difficult situation and won the Champions League and FA Cup.

“He did well and there wasn’t even any time this season. It is a complete surprise and very sad news.”

Wenger was also surprised Rafael Benitez agreed to replace di Matteo on a short-term contract.

Benitez was appointed as Chelsea’s interim manager just hours after Abramovich sacked di Matteo following Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Juventus.

But the former Liverpool, Inter Milan and Valencia coach is in charge only until the end of the season and Wenger believes a manager with his CV should have been looking for a permanent deal.

“It is a surprise as well. Benitez is a guy with a good record and a manager of stature,” Wenger said.

“It is a surprise he is appointed for such a short time and I’m surprised he accepted it.”

Chelsea Sack Coach Roberto Di Matteo

Chelsea have parted company with manager Roberto Di Matteo following the club's UEFA Champions League defeat by Juventus.

Di Matteo was named caretaker boss following the exit of Andre Villas-Boas last season and after leading Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup glory in May, the 42-year-old Italian signed a two-year contract in June.

Chelsea started the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League campaign well, winning seven of their opening eight matches but the club's form has dipped over recent weeks.

They have won one of their last eight matches in all competitions while on Saturday, they suffered a 2-1 League defeat at high-flying West Bromwich Albion.

And Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat by Juventus leaves the club's qualification for the Champions League knockout stages hanging by a thread.

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season.

"The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts.

"The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.
"The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager."

Di Matteo had made changes to his starting line-up for the Juventus contest, with striker Fernando Torres named on the bench, Eden Hazard pushed into a more advanced role and Cesar Azpilicueta selected on the right side of midfield.

Petr Cech had already deflected Stephan Lichtsteiner's shot onto the post before Fabio Quagliarella put the Italian side ahead when he diverted Andrea Pirlo's strike into the corner.

Arturo Vidal made it two on 61 minutes when his strike was deflected in by Ramires while Sebastian Giovinco guided the ball past the

onrushing Cech to complete the victory in injury time.
"There is big disappointment, it is a difficult evening for us, the team and the club, and there was a lot of reflection," said Di Matteo after the match.

"I am responsible for the result and the performance and it is a negative evening for us. I selected a team that I was convinced was the right team to win or at least take a draw so the blame belongs to me."
Chelsea now need to win their final Group E game against FC Nordsjaelland and hope Shakhtar Donetsk beat Juventus in order to qualify from the group.

The Blues face defending Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The image soon went viral, spreading rapidly across the Internet and spurring a meme known as “McKayla Maroney is not impressed.”

University Of Abuja Is Shut Down as Students Protest

The University of Abuja has been shut down by management following a monday morning protest by students.

Reports emanating from the Gwagwalada site of the University indicated that trouble started when some students of the Faculty of Engineering protested the inability of the school authority to bring out a timetable for their exams, even when students of other faculties have already started theirs.

A University source disclosed that there was a problem with Engineering courses as regards to accreditation, as those who graduated from the faculty were yet to get their results.
“The authorities felt there is no point writing exams for courses that have no accreditation until the issue is resolved, but the students feel shortchanged by the management. That is why they started protesting today,” the source said.
