45 Pregnant Women and 30 Disabled Persons among People Displaced By Flood in Jigawa - NEMA


The North-west zone of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that 45 pregnant women and 30 physically challenged persons are among the 1,403 displaced by last week’s flood at Yakasawa village in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State. It was gathered that they are now camping at the Junior Arabic School, Ringim.

Alhaji Musa Ilalah, the North-west zonal coordinator of NEMA, while presenting relief items to the victims said, “There are 1,403 internally displaced persons in the camp from our findings. Among them are 45 pregnant women and 30 physically challenged persons. We have brought some relief items to compliment the efforts of the state government. We are calling on people to move from flood prone areas because this particular village has a history of flooding”.

Chairman, Ringim Local Government Area, Murtala Muhammad Abubakar, said the government has provided alternative land to people in Yakasawa village, but most of them refused to move there, adding that government will device a means to make sure they comply.

He said government responded swiftly to the disaster by evacuating the victims to safety, adding that no life was lost. NEMA donated 50 bags of rice, maize, corn, millet and 200 blankets, mosquito nets, mats, clothes among others.
